P-51D 112 Sqn RAF Generics

Author Jarink
Description Many people know the story that the Mustang was originally designed for the RAF. What many people do not know is that due to the poor high altitude performance of the Allison engine, the RAF used the Mustang mainly for ground attack and reconnaissance missions. They used 828 of the Mark IV (P-51D) or IVA (P-51K) models in total. As all RAF Mustangs were lend-lease aircraft they were returned to US ownership after WWII.

112 Squadron RAF was originally formed in 1917 and served through 1919. It was reactivated in 1939 for service in the Mediterranean and Egypt. While in the desert, the squadron was equipped with the Curtis Tomahawk. It was at this time that the now-famous shark mouth was adopted and was in use with the squadron until it's disbanding in 1975.
