Since the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the railroad system had been one of the primary targets of the Luftwaffes bomber force. In 1942 units equipped with the Ju-88 began to receive small numbers of the C-6 version with fixed forward-firing guns that was especially suited for attacking trains. In early 1943 it was decided to form specialized train busting Staffeln.<br>Like other eastern front bomber units Kampfgeschwader 51 also formed such a Staffel. In April 7./KG 51 based at Bagerovo airfield was reorganized to fly railroad interdiction missions deep in the enemy's rear area, that usually took place during the night to avoid contact with enemy fighters. Only a small number of Ju-88 C-6s and JU-88 A-4s were available for this task, and the later also had to be shared with the rest of III./KG 51. As a result, most missions were flown by single aircraft and only rarely by two or three. The unit exacted a steady toll on the the Soviets locomotives and rolling stock, but in the end the successes they achieved were too limited to cause a lasting disruption of the Soviet railroad network."
