B-17D Template

The early B-17 models were revolutionary in their design as a high altitude, long range bomber, through the use of innovative (for the time) turbo-superchargers. This allowed them to fly higher and farther than any other service bombers of the pre-war era. In its first combat missions with the RAF, the B-17C (Fortress I) was essentially a failure. Even though later models were far better suited to combat, many pilots felt the early "sharktails" were much more enjoyable to fly.
