During the summer of 1940 the peoples of the Dutch East Indies wanted to show support for the Brisish during their fight against Nazi Germany. A fund to support the Netherlands 'Home Country' was set up with the aim of providing money to give to the British to buy Spitfires. At the same time British employees started their own fund (May 1940). After the fall of the Netherlands the fund was renamed 'Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds' (Queen Wilhelmina Fund) and raised a total of 5 million Dutch Guilders. In a radio speech on 12 Sept 1940 the Queen announced that funds were in place to buy 40 Spitfires and 12 Hudson Bombers. This was the start of a process to aquire 'Presentation' Spitfires that continued for many months.
