Spitfire MkIb X4272/QJ-D, 92 Sqn, Biggin Hill, Dec 1940.
92 Sqn was chosen as the Service Trials Unit for the production Hispano/BSA 20mm cannon-armed Spitfire MkI (designated as the MkIb), now fitted with the improved armament feed mechanism. X7272 was delivered in early December of 1940 and was finished in standard Dark Earth/Dark Green (in the A Scheme) with a Sky underside. The under surface of the port wing was painted in a temperory, Special Night distemper introduced in November 1940 as an aid to 'tracking' friendly aircraft combating Luftwaffe high altitude fighters.
Enclosed is QJ-D, a roundels only version and a tail flash version.
