My son watched it with me and he was surprised at the "26,000 deaths - more than the entire USMC" statistic given at the start. That's just deaths; the Eighth suffered approximately 47,000 casualties of all kinds. roughly half of the USAAF's WWII total for all theaters. That's about 13% losses of the 350,000 overall who served in the Eighth (which includes ground crew). It makes me even more amazed, thankful, and proud that my grandfather survived.
