12 years agoTue Aug 28 2012, 08:33pmAdminHi all,
being a bit undecided what to skin next i'm fiddling around building together a stuka template from vpmedia's, A&A's, Emel's and a bit of selfmade stuff. Seeing there's nearly no (heavy weathered ardon: ) MTO dora stuka skinpack this one is S7+GP of 6th Staffel from II./StG3 in the paintscheme it appeared during late 1942 - 1943 in lybia, tunisia, italy and greece.
In contrast to widespread believe very most MTO stukas served in their factory applied european standard scheme RLM 70/71/65. In many cases they were repainted in the field by simply adding sections, stripes or patterns of sand colour, sometimes they were completely painted sand. Italian colours were first used for this, later RLM 79 sandyellow. From about mid 1942 onwards, with the arrival of the dora variant, more and more stukas sticked to their european camo, which faded rapidly under the MTO conditions. Still a lot to correct here's what i have so far...
What do you think?

looking good your worn out planes, man i think they must have serverd in both ww?s to get this scratches and dents
perhaps the contrast between RLM 70 and 71 should be a little more visible
-
12 years agoAdminMaybe, take a look at these original pics:
All these were painted in RLM 70/71/65, the degree of fading is different but mostly very high.
My weathering doesn't seem to be much exaggerated compared with i. e. S7+EP, S7+GK.

Level 1Great! I am slowly working on improving Karabas Stuka family mod, and I love your skins, they will come very handy
-
AdminGreat job mate, looking well worn and torn.

Level 9Jeronimo's new spinner will perfectly fit your upcoming Stuka skins Armin ...

12 years agoLevel 3Hmm. I know a campaign that might be looking for something like these.
Back to Boelcke's comment. S7+EP seems to have clearer demarcation in places, to me.
Also, you could maybe make the angle of the diving bird a bit steeper on some skins, a la S7+EP. That would provide some interesting little variations in the skins, make them seem more 'homemade'.
Also, what's that stain visible in the picture third from bottom? Could be interesting to add to some. -
12 years agoTue May 15 2012, 04:46pmAdminHi thank you very much for your comments. Of course there are differences
in fading of the RLM 70/71. Like with my Ju52 MTO skinpacks i will take care of this with these stukas.
@flatspinman
I really would like to make the angle of the 'Huckebein' raven emblem (originated from I./StG1 which was redesignated II./StG3 in early 1942) more steep like it is historically correct.
But the area to place it (both sides of engine cowling) is awkwardly stretched/warped in the 3D model of the stuka. This is how it looks if i place the emblem the correct way (click bar to enlarge!):
Will try to get rid of this but maybe i have to go for compromises here.
BTW check all stuka skins available so far, no skinner did place an emblem in this stretched/warped area.

Excellent research Armin, a lot of myths busted again.
I would like to include these in the skin update for the DAF campaign, so will be watching closely. -
12 years agoLevel 3Nice work Armin. I figured there must be a reason for the difference as I know how precise you are in your research.
