12 years agoThu Aug 16 2012, 06:09amAdminThank you very much for your compliments!!
I always wanted to skin the stuka. I usually avoid making skins were there a enough wellmades around. Except pegase's desert dora pack no MTO or desert dora squadron skinpack so far. Although his dora template is made very well and most detailed his style of execution and historical paintscheme accuracy caused my decision to go for more here.
Skinning the stuka proofed to get the biggest challenge for me so far. The 3Dmodel is really awkward, especially the complete nose part. so yes it was a tough job to get the camo and all of my about 50 weathering layers working acceptable (perfect seems impossible) in that part.
What is planned is a semihistorical squadron skinpack (12 a/c) representing the D-1 and D-3 types received by II./StG3 around may/june 1942 onwards. I choosed II.Gruppe because it withdraw in mid april 1943
after permanent service in northern africa and therefore was the last group leaving the scene. So this skinpack will - historically - matching the period early summer 1942 to spring 1943. Although there will be some single toned sandbrown aircraft and several camouflaged sand/green ones the most of them will be in a desert faded european standard camo (blackgreen/green), as it was in reality. I found no evidence/proof for sandbrown manufactured/delivered stukas so far. They all seemed to be
repainted in the field by the crews. Therefore no 'standard desert' paintschemes. As allied air power increased stuka losses were higher and the crews no longer made efforts to repaint the replacements.
Colours used will include italian sand and even ('captured') RAF stone, because in lack of own RLM colours these were used as well for overpainting the green standard scheme.
Hope to get them finished before anyone fixes the 3D model of this aircraft...

Level 3I share your tactfully put view of pegase' pack Armin so I'm really looking forward to yours. As usual your depth of research and artistry are exeptional. And your right, finish them quick before they "fix" the Mapping!
