AdminFilmed back in 1994, this vid shows the late Mark Hanna flying an FR.XIVe at the Wanka Airshow here in NZ. Later on this Spit was badly damaged in an accident however it has been undergoing restoration and will soon be flying again. It'll be staying here in NZ which I'm happy about as I really want to hear that Griffon engine with my own ears rather than just on youtube vids.
Something that occurred to me while watching Mark Hanna chuck the Spit about is that, compared to airshows in the UK/Aus/NZ etc, there seems to be less aerobatics at US airshows of classic warbirds and more straight'n'level flybys... if that's so is it a regulations thing or some other reason?

9 years agoSat Mar 28 2015, 04:56pmMain AdminIts new regulations, that were brought on by accidents, ivents etc.
This weeks A320 inncident is a good example.
Always new rules to address issues of safety.
Not alway thought through to the correct conclusion, unfortunately.
My first flight I had real cutlery and a cloth napkin, & also curtains!!
When 911 hit,a pilot was stopped from boarding due to the fact he had a pen-knife or nail clippers.
His answer was a classic.

AdminAh I see, a pity but understandable.

Main AdminThere will always be human error.
But you can still get pretty close, if you so desire.

AdminWhen I made my first post I didn't realize just how close she was to flying again! I believe she flew for the first time since '95 on 2 April and after a series of test flights she flew down to Omaka (where she'll be based) on the 3rd in time for the Easter weekend airshow they have called Classic Fighters. Hopefully there'll soon be vids of her display flights at Omaka however here is a vid of a test flight at Ardmore before her depature with some great angles of the take-off and landing

Main AdminWhat a wondeful sound, thanks for posting.

Level 3Superb as it may be to see former combat aircraft put through their paces as they age this puts them at increasing risk. I'd rather see a level fly-by rather than hear of yet another original plane being written off just to entertain the public.
