Level 7Well okay nothing for dear Il-2, hate to say that. But to show I've not remained idle due to my studies I want to share you with my latest project. A 3D model of my favourite WWII fighter the FW 190A. This model was to be part of my graduation project but never got finished in time. All moving parts are animated, prop, canopy, ctrl surfaces etc. Here are few shots of the almost finished version. I included a pic of the diffuse map for you to see how I solved the map layout. Some objects (mechanical and interior) had to be placed to a different map. So There are two maps for this plane. One for the exterior and one for the interior textures. I'm in the process of texturing the interior parts. They'll be finished probably this weekend. And then it's time to re-link the moving parts an do some test animation to clear out possible anomaly movement in the moving parts before "sending her to the front lines".
Oh yes, one more thing. As a skinner I'd like to say that working with 2048 res maps is a joy and you can really do some cool stuff. The camouflage example of this early Eastern Front 190A follows the pattern of the 190s flown by the pilots of JG 51 in the autumn of 1942. It's not a historical scheme only a fabrication. Colors were designed by me and they ehem... seem to consist of the standard RLM 70/71 mixture with some unknown, possibly captured enemy colors, or perhaps colors concocted by local maintenance crews. I can't be sure were I obtained the Falcon head, but the other markings were designed by me. Hope you like these snapshots.

12 years agoFri Jun 01 2012, 07:46pmAdminVery impressive. I wish we had such models in the game.
Have you ever thought about doing a model according to Il-2 standards? -
AdminIt looks nice! while it probably isn't useful for IL2 or even SoW, there is still one neat way to use 3D models like this: profiling. There's a few people that I've seen over at Simmer's Paintshop that build the 3D model, skin it, then screenshot it instead of building a traditional 2D profile. It apparently makes the lighting much easier and more accurate. It also means you can use the same model for any number of pictures, even action shots.

Main Adminhey Marcus, very impressing

Level 7Hi and hanks guys
Have you ever thought about doing a model according to Il-2 standards?
Juri_JS
Yes, it has crossed my mind, and it would be cool to get into something like that. If only I knew what the standards are.
The model seen in these screenshots was intended for animation rather than gaming. It could be considered too heavy for games like IL-2 etc. and I'm not so sure about the quality either. But then again by todays standards (Clod or Flightsim X) it might actually not be so heavy. I don't know.It also means you can use the same model for any number of pictures, even action shots.

Spot on. Once you have the model completed and mapped you can basically create any historical skin to it just like we do in Il-2 with the existing models. The difference is that you can choose you resolution and its your model so you can change anything you're not happy with and rework it to perfection. You can copy the completed version just like anything else in the world of computers and create a flight or a squadron with individual markings and camos to each A/C (!)
You can create a scene of an historical event and make still shots from them like we do with IL-2 when building a composite pic out of several differen screenshots to promote our skinpacks etc. And yes profiling too, but the most important fact is you can create fully flegded animation scenes which is the way I'd like to go. Action stills is tempting option too. Reminding all the above naturally takes much more time to create, unfortunately.
Btw, a small update about the texture thing. I scrapped a days worth of work today. The interiors didn't look good enough to me. Started all over with a higher res map. That's the way it is.

The old Il-2 modeling bible gives an overview of the standards:

To get more detailed information, I think it is best to talk to the Team Daidalos guys or other people, who have already build models for the game. -
Level 7Excellent, thanks for the link.

Level 1All I can say is Wow!!

AdminThat is really cool mate, well done.
