Admin"Flying" magazine story
I had the good fortune to see Mr. Hoover fly in a number of airshows. He was certainly one of the best pilot I've ever seen. The absolute control he could exhibit over an airplane was astounding. He's most famous for his acrobatic displays flying a P-51 or a Shrike Aero Commander. The Shrike was my favorite routine as he would fly half of it on only one engine, then shut down the other before doing rolls before landing!
Oh, and near the end of WWII he escaped from Stalag Luft I, stole a Fw-190 and flew it to the Netherlands. -
