I saw a report on TV yesterday and was wondering what the 9 "cannon balls" were.

According to one of my books, they are oxygen cylinders.
All prevous 109 models had larger cylinders in the fuselage, but the 109 K-4 introduced this new
set of 9 spherical cylinders mounted in the starboard wing in October 1944.
Description of the 109 K-4 oxygen system is here (item 1)
