Ren? Darbois was born in Metz in 1923. He was therefore 17 years old at the time of the armistice when the regions of eastern France, Alsace and Lorraine were annexed by the Third Reich. Young Frenchmen were then enlisted in the German army.
Darbois chose the Luftwaffe, hoping that the long training as an aviator would enable him to escape the fighting against the Allies. But he finished his training in June 1944 and was assigned to 3/JG4 in northern Italy, near Udine. From then on, he fomented escape plans. He took advantage of his full tanks during the transfer of his squadron to Gh?dia to desert. Darbois finally landed at Santa Maria airfield, north of Naples, to the great surprise of the soldiers of the 72nd US Air Force Liaison Squadron3. Having joined the Allied forces, Darbois ended the war over Germany, on a Spitfire V within the 1/3 Corsica Fighter Group.
