12 years agoLevel 3I don't wish to alarm anyone, but the Tunisia campaign for the LW may actually finally, after all this time, be nearly done, and it's only a year and a half overdue (and counting).
Finished my MA, changed jobs, got a handle on the new one, kids are that little not anymore, and best of all, I have about six weeks off soon.
Still need to finish some missions, add some ground detail to bases, do a final skin check (do we have any A20s and RAF Spit Vcs?) but in the last two weeks I've got a bit done. -

Level 1I don't wish to alarm you either, but when you get 'fully Montied' you are going to have a lot of new stuff to play with and will probably want to make another pass over the mission set with the new toybox, ahem sorry, toolbox...

11 years agoLevel 3Can anyone confirm that JG51 in Tunisia were only air to air? I'd love to do a little tank busting but that was probably the Schlachtgeswadern role.
Also, Detlef. Those lovely 190 skins you sent me so long ago - wee they for JG2? I can't find the info anymore.
-
AdminI'm not 100% sure about JG51 but I'd say it was pretty common for the fighter units to try help out with the land battles when things went pear shaped.

I think you can say so - at least in Tunisia, JG 51, 53, 77 and 27 were mostly deployed there in fighter role.
For the Jg 2 Butcher Birds look this:

and a SchG 2 skin for Fw 190 A5 in Tunisia, SchG 2 was the redesignated SGK 10

From Osprey's 'JG51 - M?lders' (aviation elite units 22) pages 96/97:
'By 3rd of March (1943) just six of the new Gustavs remained servicable. Further machines had to be ferrried in from Sicily, but the only ones available were G-2's. The rest of the month was mainly spent in costly ground-attack missions in southern Tunisia, where the British 8th Army was about to outflank the frontier defences of the Mareth line. By month's end II./JG51 had lost six more pilots and its servicability returns were back down into single figures. Yet more aircraft had to be brought in and this time the Gruppe got G-4s.'

Btw. i have the book "Focke-Wulfs in Africa", which is a day by day account of the air war over Tunisia where the Fw 190 was employd by JG 2 and SKG 10 later called SG 2, but in this theater of operations the Bf 109?s from the other units were mostly used as escort for the ground attack planes.

11 years agoLevel 3Aargh. Detlef - you are too good. You were right - I did mean JG53! I'm worried I may have made that same mistake in some briefings. Well, plenty of things still to check.
Armin - that info you provided was great though - for other flights or possibly even a bit of stretching the facts. As HBPencil wrote, when backs were to the wall I'm sure there must have been the odd variation.
Thanks again for the responses. -
