12 years agoLevel 3TUNISIA CAMPAIGN UPDATE
CURRENT STATUS 27 Oct 2012 (that should really read 2010!)
- Most missions made, tested, elaborated upon, dressed with a slice of lime.
- Bases, ground battles populated and trimmed up a bit.
- Skins - largely finalised but there's still another round of checking and trimming required. I think I'll need to reduce the number as
there are so many types of plane in this campaign, so the current size of the skin pack would be unwieldy. We shall see.
TO DO
- Make a few more LW ground attack missions and a couple of Freijagds. Also, the "Great Escape" mission.
- Check all the skins yet again.
- Reorder some of the missions. I started off building sequentially then went off on all sorts of tangents, so now need to make sure
that missions happen at historically appropriate times - eg, when particular aircraft were in theatre; according to actual historical
events; und so weiter.
- Check the briefings for errors, add some historical background (wider war news, etc), make sure there is continuity.
CURRENT PHILOSOPHY
This campaign has always been intended as a way to say 'Thank you' to the guys who have done so much to improve IL2, virtually since day 1 - the skinners. Because they're such sticklers for accuracy I had originally intended to make this a historically accurate campaign. However, once again my imagination, general dissolution and utter lack of discipline got the better of me, so it is now "historically inspired" (I'm waiting for Hollywood to sign me up as a war movie script writer). Oddly enough, the more outlandish missions you will encounter are the historically accurate(ish) ones. You'll know them when you see them. They mostly involve huge numbers of Jim and Armin's skins being blown up.
To make for added replayability I have done two things.
1. I made three versions of each mission, which will be chosen randomly when you play through in campaign mode.
2. There's so much stuff going on in every mission that if you take a slightly different approach, the same mission can play out quite
differently. For example, once you might go hard out against the fighters. The second time, evade them and focus on the
bombers. There's generally a couple of decisions like that that you will need to make on the fly.
RELEASE SCHEDULE
DATE: I have no f&%#ng clue. I'm already two years late! Don't believe a word I say.
CONTENTS:
Initially I will release a campaign for the BF109G4 with DBW1.71 compatability. I think it'll be okay in anything from DBW 1.4, too, as that's what I made most of it with.
This will be followed by an FW-190 version using virtually the same missions and briefings.
Then I'd like to run them through Simon's FULL MONTYizer to see what other cool things can be added to improve them. I would have done this already, but as my IL2 time is limited to about one hour 3 times a week, usually when I'm falling asleep over the keyboard, I just want to get it out as is.
Also on my list is to release Allied versions for:
- The P-40. This is possibly the sexiest plane ever imagined, let alone built. I love it!
I imagine the player will be a USAAF pilot initially on loan to the RAF to gather experience (some US units served with the RAF/DAF
learning the ropes, I seem to recall reading, so it kind of fits) and then returned to his original unit. Ground and air-to-air = WIN!
- A pure fighter version in the Spitfire would be cool. I've never flown the Spit much, but I love her looks, especially in desert colours.
- If I can, I'd love to add a medium bomber version too, flying the Boston, and possibly a ride or two in a Mitchell.
It all sounds so simple - theory just a quick tweaking of existing missions. Ha! I'll believe that when I see it! We shall see how it goes.
And now for the teaser.
Willi Jedermann will be returning to the virtual skies - over Russia!!!!
He'll be reporting for duty in mid-June, 1941, at an undisclosed airfield in Romania.
LUFTWAFFE PILOT: BARBAROSSA! -

12 years agoLevel 3TRY A DEMO MISSION!
Just drop this in your Missions folder. Then start the game, go to the Full Mission Builder, look for Tunisia '43 Frontline Demo.
It's a bit different.
No skins are included, but you'll get the general idea. I have used a lot more ground detail in this particular mission, for reasons which will become apparent. If you play it and find the objective unclear or unachievable, it's probably just because the AI Jabo's took your objective out. It happens sometimes.

12 years agoLevel 3A deafening silence!
Did anyone try it?
Anyway, the last month has been a bit mad but today I just cleared the last major hurdle so I hope to have time again. I still managed to get some useful behind the scenes work done, but plan (hah!) to make a few more missions then go through yet another check.
By Christmas (2012 just to be clear) you'll have your hot sweaty paws all over this campaign.
Probably. -
AdminI just tested the demo. You did a really good job populating the map. Must have been an awful lot of work. With the many small details, it looks like a diorama.
-
Level 1Love it !
where did the UK P-40 skin come from in the promo-picture ? -
12 years agoLevel 3Thanks for trying it out guys. Yes, it took ages but I really enjoyed populating it to that extent. I was trying to make it an interactive diorama, I suppose. It was my first time playing il2 from that perspective and I really got sucked in.
The P40 skin was made by Cheruskerarmin and will be included in the download. And, just from a quick peek at the picture, I think it's a SAAF skin. There is an RAF version too, so fear not. -
Level 1Thanks great news
-
Level 2Hi FlatSpinMan and thanks for the Demo.
Have tried it out and it looks and feeling just right. Can not imagine all the work you have put in to it.
I was realy taking part in a big battle, There must be a burning hell on the ground, amazing cenarios you
manage to create. This campaign are worth waiting for..
Salut for your great skill and effort to finish this big WWII event in the MTO and Afrika Dessert war.
Best regards
