Main AdminThe Martin B-26 Marauder was used in large numbers by the revived French Armée de l'Air from 1943, and was used during the fighting in Italy and southern France. The Armée de l'Air or Free French Air Force was formed around a core of former Vichy units that had been based in North Africa during Operation Torch.
The first Marauders began to reach Free French units in late 1943. Eventualy GB I/11 Maroc, GB II/20 Bretagne, GB I/19 Gascogne, GB II/52 Franche-Comte, GB II/63 Senegal, and BG I/32 Bourgogne were equipped with Marauders. These units were initially supplied with earlier-model war-weary Marauders for training purposes, then were re-equipped with newer B-26s.
At first these squadrons took part in the campaign in Italy, but in the summer of 1944 they were used to support Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France, and after the Allied landings on 15 August all of the French Marauder groups moved onto French soil, where they were used to provide tactical support for the American and French armies as they advanced north and east across France and into Germany.
Last operations took place on April 25, 1945.
Toward the end of the war, seven of the nine French Groupes de Bombardement used the Marauder, taking part in 270 missions with 4,884 aircraft sorties in combat. Free French B-26 groups were disbanded in June 1945. Replaced in squadron service by 1947, two lingered on as testbeds for the Snecma Atar jet engine, one of these remaining in use until 1958.
Photos below taken in North Africa and Italy, unfortunately not much other info.
