12 years agoThu Sep 13 2012, 08:13pmAdminShortly before and during the Pacific war the Japanese produced several aviation movies for propaganda purposes.
Some of the flight scenes are really amazing and for some of the plane types shown in these movies few other footage exists.
Here a few clips with flights scenes from these movies:
From "Kato hayabusa sento-tai" (1944) about Tateo Kato and the 64th Sentai. The allied planes in the flight scenes are a Bufallo and a P-40 captured early in the war.
I don't know from which movie the clip is, but it shows a B-17D, probably captured in the Philippines. The Ki-43 show the markings of the 1st Sentai.
From the movie "Raigekitai shutsudo" (1944). Live action footage cut together with special effects models.
From the movie "Raigekitai shutsudo" (1944).
Scenes showing the Kawanishi K8K.
From the movie "Moyuru ozora" (1940), the first Japanese movie that used real aircraft for combat scenes. Ki-27 in a mock dogfight with Ki-10. Shows very well how maneuverable the Ki-27 was.
From "Moyuru ozora" (1940).

The man responsible for the special effects in most of these aviation movies was Eiji Tsuburaya. After the war he was the special effects director of the Godzilla movies.
