Level 3Seriously I sometimes think we forget how lucky we are. The blue jobs in the last pic are Link Trainers.Back in the seventies I arranged to have one restored to working condition for an exhibit in a major national aero-space collection. The restoration cost several thousand pounds, a lot of money in those days. For our cash we got a plywood box containing an aircraft seat , stick and pedals and a panel with compass and a about half a dozen basic instruments, ours was supposed to represent an early Mk. of the Meteor jet-fighter. The whole thing was mounted on some basic hydraulics.
You climbed into the box, pulled the hood shut, "took off" and attemted to fly the course relayed to you over the head-set. Other than the instruments there were no visuals and no sensation of flight, exept being unconvincingly chucked about by the crude hydraulics. At the end of your "flight" you climbed out of the coffin and checked your flight path which had been crudely and jerkily drawn on the map by the Crab, the device on the table in front of the guy on the right. No external views,no visual replay, no sound and no combat.
Now,because of its age not its quality, you can pick up IL2 46 for a couple of quid and experience a degree of realism that th designers of those early trainers could only dream of.
