11 years agoSat Dec 29 2012, 09:23pmAdminTriangle markings weren't used by Schlachtflieger only. They were in use as tactical (gruppe, staffel or glider towing symbol etc.) and sometimes even unit markings too. The two winter pics are showing Ju52 of KGrzbV102 and this unit
used triangles for unit identification. Refering to the staffelcolour the triangles
(on both wing leading edges and the tail fin, staffelleaders an additional one on fuselage top between gunner and tail) were painted white, red, yellow, blue or green, the latter four with a white outline. So the aircraft shown here are from
the 2. Staffel of KGrzbV102 at Stalingrad.

Level 7May 8th 1945. A lone German fighter pilot in his Long Nose 190 is fleeing from the advancing Red Army and wanting to surrender to the western allied forces rather than the Russians. Now approaching F?rth airfield occupied by American forces. Estimated time of arrival, about two minutes, and then the war at last will be over for him... Not a very immersive speech, but hopefully the image supplements the script

11 years agoMain AdminGreat catch Emil, I an still plodding my way through WW2 Der Luftkreig !!
Mission 280, we just left Stalingrad and are back at the Kuban, now with G-6's!
Came across this Kuban skin, Author "Junior & Tank Eriv" ???????
If anyone needs a copy of this amazing Add-on PM me.
I sent Monty a copy and he is "Gobsmacked", aircraft taking off and landing at the same time from both ends of the runway, taking off line abreast, it's a "HOOT", I have not had so much fun with Il-2 in ages.
Only another 370 missions to go !!
Anyway coming home just me and the 2nd flight leader, after a bombing mission, first intercepted by eight LA-5's, and then 20 mins later Eight Lagg-3's hit us.
Hot, rather sweaty & tired, but pleased!

Cheers Armin, that's good to know -
11 years agoLevel 3Nice shots guys, and nice little immersive backgrounds as well. It's great when the mission throws you into the period like the ones above seem to have done.
Duggy - Tankeriv (Alex Hakkenburg) made a couple of impressive mission pack addons for IL2. I had one about the end of the war. I don't know where it's gone but the amount of work in it beggars belief. I have seen him again recently on one of the forums, forget which. -

Armin, Your a real Luftstorian.
Yikes! Good stuff.
I'm just an active member in three WWII luftwaffe/-aviation forums and therefore never stop learn. Many wellknown book authors and experts around there (i. e. Rudolf Hecke, Hans-Peter Dabrowski, Gerhard Stemmer, Jochen Prien). I own a lot of books inbetween.
Got three more for christmas: 'Stopped at Stalingrad - the Luftwaffe and Hitler's defeat in the east' by Joel Hayward, 'Die Stalingrad-Protokolle' by Jochen Hellbeck and 'A History of the Mediterranean Air War, 1940-1945, Vol. 1: North Africa, June 1940-January 1942' by Christopher Shores. The last is a brandnew edition with lots of new research facts of same author's books ('fighters over the desert' and 'fighters over tunisia') published about 30 years ago.
You see...much to read and learn again.
However sometimes it's not funny: Imagine a skinpack just finished when brandnew research facts requiring to rework all the skins...

BTW this is what i'm currently working on: Stalingrad winter G-2 messers from Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik, an (cauldron) airfield protection squadron made up by volunteers from I./ and II./JG3. Jumped in to make these for Juri_Js forthcoming mission pack:
