AdminA few weeks ago I started researching Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik, which was a detachment of Jagdgeschwader 3, based at Pitomnik airfield near Stalingrad.
So far I haven't found much detailed information about the missions flown by the unit (mission reports, loss lists, etc.). I guess the best place to find such information is the JG 3 book written by Prien and Stemmer, which I don't have.
It would be great if somebody who owns the book could tell me which information it contains? -

These pilots were doing an incredible outstanding job under the worst thinkable circumstances to keep the last main airfield in the stalingrad cauldron open and free from aerial attacks as long as posiible. They never were given enough credits for this as the Luftwaffe in general was given
a main responsibility for the failure of the airlift and the resulting defeat/capture of the 6th army.
I researched stalingrad and this theme/unit some time ago when building an own mission around it.
I recall i couldn't find any pic/drawing etc showing the facilities of Pitomnik airfield.
One of my banners is depicting a pitomnik platzschutzstaffel scene:
Platzschutzstaffel (airfield protection squadron) Pitomnik (parts of I. and II./JG3 with G-2 messers), Stalingrad cauldron january 1943.
I should have some copies from the related prien books. Furthermore i'm in personal contact with Gerhard Stemmer.
I will look what i have for you and proceed via pm if you agree.

AdminThank you Armin. It was your banner that inspired me to start the research. I have to admit, I had never heard about Platzschutzstaffel Pitomnik before.

12 years agoAdminI own Christer Bergstr?m's 'Stalingrad - the air battle' and Heinz Kurowski's
'luftbr?cke Stalingrad' too - apart from other stalingrad related books. At last i know Gerhard Stemmer - an outstanding luftwaffe expert and researcher. So we should find some useful infos for you.

AdminThe best I have found so far it this research paper from the American Air Command and Staff Collage:
http://spitfirevsbf109.com/files/LuftwaffeStalingrad.pdf
It also has a chapter about the Platzschutzstaffel. -
12 years agoAdminThis chapter isn't bad - very detailed info on Kurt Ebener's missions. Unfortunately it doesn't cover the whole
period from late november to mid january 1943. -
AdminObviously the chapter is mostly based on the article ?Jagdflieger in Stalingrad: Aus den Aufzeichnungen des Oberleutnant Kurt Ebener', published in 'Deutsches Soldatenjahrbuch, 1973, pp. 193-202.'
It would be interesting to read the article. Maybe I can get it in my local library.

12 years agoAdminKurt Ebener's reports are mentioned in the Prien books too - if you cannot get them i will ask Gerhard Stemmer for a copy.

12 years agoSat Dec 15 2012, 10:47amLevel 1I have an idea. Two people .
Both Andrew aka Greif and Monty.. Andrew was making all sorts of stuff such as 500 gal drums and lots of air strip pieces
Monty also...has a huge collection as well and might be able to help
If you need to get in touch with Andrew, he is in the Ukraine...We talk on Skype .I'll give him your info, and try to connect you, although Skype is still the very best.. Dont worry about language, Everyone I speak with are not all English speaking. We all just jump in.
More fun that way.
Good Luck

AdminI am creating the missions in the unmodded game.
I think I found a solution for the craters. When some of the smaller objects are destroyed in FMB the are turned into a pile of rubble, that can be used to simulate craters.
