Target Singapore - The air war over Singapore and Malaya in 1944 and 1945.

Over the past weeks I have researched for my own amusement a forgotten episode of WW2, the air war over Malaya and Singapore in late 1944 and 1945. A by-product was a pack of missions based on my research results. Some of the missions are historial others are semi-historical. Semi-historcial means, they have a historcial background, but I used some artistic freedom to make them more interesting.
Part of the pack are missions for the Japanese Army and Navy Air Force and the USAAF. The skins used in the missions are by Boelcke, Emel, Jarink, Jaypack and myself.

Here is something I like to show you. From one of the historcial missions in the pack dramatic real life photo footage exists that was taken by the crew of a US-Navy PB4Y over Singapore. The photos were very useful for me during mission building to determine the course of the American bombers. Because we don't have the PB4Y-2 in the stock game I had to replace it with the PB4Y-1/B-24J.



A PB4Y-2 Privateer flown by Lieutenant Commander "Pappy" Mears from VPB-106 over Singapore during a reconnaissance mission on 1 June 1945. The airfield under the tail of the plane is Tebrau in southern Malaya. In the background the Strait of Johor and the island of Singapore can be seen. The photos were taken by the crew of a PB4Y-1 flown by Lieutenant (jg) Heyler from VPB-111.



The two PB4Y were attacked by a group of Ki-43 Oscars. One of them hit the No. 3 engine of Mears's plane that caught fire.



The burning Privateer steadily lost altitude and both planes headed to the south-west towards the open sea. Heyler's PB4Y stayed near the damaged plane to protect it from further attacks.



Mears's stricken plane prepares to ditch. On the left one of the attacking Oscars can be seen. Shortly after this photo was taken the No. 4 engine cut out and soon afterwards the star-board wing broke off. The Privateer crashed into the sea and none of the crew members survived. Heyler's PB4Y-1 managed to escape after fending off numerous attacks.

My Great Uncle was aboard that PB4Y-2 as the tail gunner on 6/1/1945 over Singapore. I discovered the crash location thru a declassified report 3 months ago. I have been in contact with a Project Recover and DPAA, trying to get them to go find it. We have a Facebook page of our progress. https://www.facebook.com/VPB106Crew3/ I hired a researcher to find the actual photos at the National Archive (NARA) and they are stunning. It?s awesome to see someone take an interest in this flight. Would love to see the mission in the game. Anyone have it recorded?
