Arado Ar 196A-5

The Allies recovered two Ar 196A-5s found on board the German battlecruiser Prinz Eugen when she surrendered at Copenhagen Denmark. When the US Navy took custody of Prinz Eugen, they were more interested in the catapult system used to launch the floatplane rather than the Ar 196A-5 but they saved the two aircraft anyway. The ship sailed to the US leaving Bremerhaven, Germany on 13Jan46 and arrived at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yards on 3 Feb 46. Flight tested off the coast of Delaware. From 1949 it was stored in the open at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Under deteriorating general conditions its identifier changed successively to TW+SH, T3+HK and GA+DX. In 1989 the aircraft was transferred to the National Museum of Naval Aviation (NMNA), later the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola, Florida, being severely damaged in the process. In March 2013 the navies of the USA and Germany reached an agreement by which the aircraft was transported to Germany on loan to the Marinefliegergeschwader 3 ("Graf Zeppelin") for restoration at the Aeronauticum in Nordholz, south of Cuxhaven, Germany. For various reasons, the proposed restoration by the Aeronauticum failed. At the beginning of 2016 the commander of Marinefliegergeschwader initiated the founding of a non-profit association. The task of the Förderverein Arado 196 eV is to restore the Arado 196 at the Aeronauticum. After completion of the restoration the aircraft will go on display in Germany for an indefinite period before return back to the USA. -

And some amazing shots of Lieutenant Collingham, pilot of this Blackburn B24 Skua fighter and dive bomber assigned to 803 Naval Air Squadron of the British Fleet Air Arm landed on the fjord at Trondheim 1939.
At the outbreak of World War II, the Skuas and Rocs which formed 803 Squadron were embarked on HMS Ark Royal. Operating out of Scapa Flow, the squadron carried out anti-submarine patrols in the Northwestern Approaches (losing two Skuas in an attack on U-30 on 14 September 1939 and defending SS Fanad Head) and regular patrols off Norway (during which the squadron shot down the first German aircraft to be shot down by a British aircraft in the war, a Dornier 18, on 26 September 1939). The squadron's activities continued off Norway (though leaving her Rocs behind), operating there in April 1940 from HMS Glorious. 803 and 800 Squadrons successfully dive bombed and sank the German cruiser Königsberg at Bergen (with 800 providing five aircraft and seven crews in contrast to 803's eleven aircraft and nine crews), though an attack by 803 from Ark Royal on the German battleship Scharnhorst in June was less successful, with the loss of all but two aircraft
