  • WASHINGTON (AFNS) --

    The Department of the Air Force announced today the contract award for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Platform, marking a major milestone in the advancement of air superiority. The contract, awarded to Boeing, will lead to the development of the F-47, the world’s first sixth-generation fighter aircraft.

    “I'm thrilled to announce that, at my direction, the United States Air Force is moving forward with the world's first sixth-generation fighter jet,” said President Donald J. Trump during a press briefing at the White House. “Nothing in the world comes even close to it, and it'll be known as the F-47.”

    This decision follows a fair and thorough source selection process conducted by the Air Force, reaffirming the NGAD Platform as the most capable and cost-effective solution to maintain air superiority in an increasingly complex and contested global threat environment. The decision reflects the Air Force’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to the warfighter while optimizing taxpayer investment.

    “In terms of all of the attributes of a fighter jet, there's never been anything even close to it, from speed to maneuverability, to what it can have, to payload. And this has been in the works for a long period of time,” Trump added. “America’s enemies will never see it coming.”

    In May 2024, the Air Force conducted a strategic pause in the program to ensure it was making the right decision for its warfighters and for the security of the nation. During this time, the Air Force continued collaborating with industry to aggressively mature critical technologies and accelerate innovation.

    “Now we have the F-47, which sends a very direct, clear message to our allies that we're not going anywhere… and to our enemies that we can, and we will be able to project power around the globe, unimpeded, for generations to come,” said Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Pete Hegseth.

    Hegseth stated the F-47 represents a significant advancement over the F-22, which is currently the U.S. Air Force's primary air superiority fighter.

    “This is a historic investment in the American military, in the American Industrial Base, that will help revive the warrior ethos inside our military, which we're doing--rebuilding our military,” Hegseth added. “We know this is cheaper, longer range and more stealthy.”

    As the cornerstone of the NGAD Family of Systems, the F-47 is designed to integrate next-generation stealth, sensor fusion, and long-range strike capabilities to counter the most sophisticated adversaries in contested environments. Its adaptability and modular design ensure seamless integration with emerging technologies, positioning it as a dominant platform for decades to come.

    “With this F-47 as the crown jewel in the Next Generation Air Dominance Family of Systems, we believe that this provides more lethality,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin. “It provides more capability, more modernized capability, in a way that is built to adapt, along with our Collaborative Combat Aircraft.”

    Over the past five years, in strong partnership between the Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, X-planes have been laying the foundation for the F-47. These experimental aircraft have flown hundreds of hours, advancing stealth, range, and autonomous systems while refining operational concepts.

    “Hopefully, these magnificent planes will be built and in the air during my administration. It's ready to go. They've already built much of what has to be built in terms of production, including the sheds.” Trump added. “We will ensure that the USA continues to dominate the skies.”

    By leveraging cutting-edge digital engineering techniques and government-owned architecture, the F-47 benefits from a streamlined and accelerated development timeline compared to previous fighter programs. These advancements enable rapid technology integration, ensuring the F-47 remains adaptable and upgradable to meet future mission requirements and counter emerging threats.

    “Air dominance is not a birthright, but it's become synonymous with American airpower, but our dominance needs to be earned every single day,” said Allvin. “Since the earliest days of aerial warfare, brave American Airmen have jumped into their machines, taken to the air, and they've cleared the skies. That's been our commitment to the fight, and that's really been our promise to America, and with this F-47 we're going to be able to keep that promise well into the future.”

    The contract award funds the engineering and manufacturing development phase, which includes maturing, integrating, and testing all aspects of the F-47. This phase will produce a small number of test aircraft for evaluation. The contract also includes competitively priced options for low-rate initial production.

    Future basing decisions and additional program elements will be determined in the coming years as the Air Force advances the F-47 toward operational deployment.

    KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, March 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Malaysia Aviation Group today announced an order for 18 737-8 and 12 737-10 single-aisle jets to renew Malaysia Airlines' fleet with more fuel-efficient airplanes. The order, which booked in January 2025 and was posted as unidentified on Boeing's orders and deliveries website, will enable Malaysia's flag carrier to introduce new lie-flat seats and meet growing travel demand in Southeast Asia – one of the fastest-growing commercial aviation markets.

    The region's airplane fleet is projected to grow nearly 250% over the next 20 years, underscoring the importance of Malaysia Aviation Group's investment in the 737-8's versatility and the 737-10's capacity as the largest member of the 737 MAX family.

    The Boeing 737 has served as the backbone of Malaysia Airlines' single-aisle fleet for nearly 60 years following the introduction of its first 737-100 in 1969. Malaysia Airlines has since operated nearly every variant of the 737 family and will continue that legacy with this latest order for the 737 MAX.

    With more than 50 737 jets in Malaysia Airlines' fleet, the introduction of additional 737-8s and the 737-10 offers operational commonality and the best per-seat economics in their class, reducing fuel use and emissions by 20%.

Of the more than 4,700 new airplanes expected to be delivered to the region's operators through 2043, nearly 80% will be single-aisle jets, such as the 737 MAX family.

    SEATTLE, Mar. 25, 2025 – Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Japan Airlines (JAL) today finalized an order for 17 737-8s to leverage the fuel efficiency and flexibility of the 737 MAX. The airline aims to launch the new 737 MAX jets on its robust domestic network, amid continued record-breaking tourism. This marks JAL’s second order for the 737-8 and nearly doubles its 737 MAX backlog to 38 firm orders.

    "The 737 has been the backbone of our single-aisle fleet for nearly 50 years, and we are honored to continue its legacy as part of our future fleet,” said Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines. “We are excited to add more 737-8s to deliver a safe and secure journey to our valued customers with a sophisticated flying experience."

    JAL will benefit from the market-leading capabilities of the 737-8, which reduces fuel use and carbon emissions by 15% compared to the Next-Generation 737-800s the airline is replacing. Commonality across the 737 family allows JAL to seamlessly integrate the 737-8 into its existing fleet.

    “We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are honored by their decision to double down on the 737 MAX for the airline’s fleet modernization program,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “By selecting the 737-8, Japan Airlines will gain operational and economic efficiencies, positioning them for success in the years ahead.”

    With the 737-8, JAL will debut the Boeing Sky Interior, offering passengers an elevated cabin experience featuring advanced LED lighting, larger windows and spacious overhead bins.

    As a longtime Boeing customer, JAL currently operates 767s, 777s and Next-Generation 737-800s, and was among the first airlines to operate the 787 Dreamliner. With a mix of more than 50 787-8s and 787-9s already in operation, JAL recently ordered 10 additional 787-9s to meet growing demand for international travel.

    The airline’s subsidiary, ZIPAIR Tokyo, recently announced plans to increase capacity on its international network by integrating 10 787-9s, previously operated by JAL, into its fleet. Boeing Global Services was selected to provide nose-to-tail interior modifications on these airplanes.

    Victoria, Australia (March 24, 2025) – Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, announced, at the Avalon Australian International Airshow, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has entered into a second service provision contract for QPS POLAIR services for three additional Bell 429s, which will expand the number of Bell helicopters in its current fleet to six.

    In 2022, contract provider Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) signed for three Bell 429s, operating the QPS POLAIR fleet responsible for patrolling and supporting on-ground policing efforts in southeast Queensland.

    The new batch of Bell 429s is part of a POLAIR service provision contract between QPS and Townsville-based Meridian Helicopters to provide a similar airborne law enforcement capability in north Queensland for the next 10 years.

    “It fills us with much pride to have QPS and their service providers see the immense value the Bell 429 brings to the table, especially in keeping Queenslanders, far and wide, safe. The addition of these three aircraft will enhance QPS’ aerial functions, improve response times and support critical missions, reinforcing the global reputation of the Bell 429 as a high quality and reliable law enforcement platform,” said Daniel McQuestin, business development director for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Rim, Bell.

    Equipped with night vision capabilities and cameras, the Bell 429 will be configured with these essential features to assist QPS officers in tracking vehicles, apprehending offenders and locating missing persons from the air.

    Around the world, the Bell 429 has built a name for itself as an aircraft that excels in its support for law enforcement, HEMS and utility work as well as corporate transport, as evidenced by high-profile users of the light twin platform, which include the New South Wales Police Force, New Zealand Police, Canadian Coast Guard, Indonesia National Police, New York Police Department, Royal Thai Police, and Swedish National Police.

    The Bell 429, with the largest cabin space in its class and two powerful PW207D1/D2 FADEC-equipped engines, can be kitted out with law enforcement-specific features such as an infrared camera, searchlight, removable and sliding doors, wire strike protection system, optional auxiliary fuel tank, fast rope insertion / extraction system, and an equipment operator station with one or two advanced tactical displays.

    Over 500 Bell 429s are currently in operation worldwide, with more than 735,000 flight hours accumulated.

    Bell is co-located at booth #3M9 in Hall 3 at the Avalon Airport for Avalon 2025, where a 1/8 scale model of the United States Army Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) is on display, alongside a 1/10 scale model of a Bell 525.     Under the terms of an offset project, Pilatus and Lockheed Martin will partner on the technology and development of avionics and training functionality for its advanced next-generation pilot training system. This will allow Pilatus to provide a bespoke pilot training solution to customers operating the F-35 and other fifth-generation frontline aircraft.

    In 2022, Switzerland finalized an agreement to purchase the F-35A. The F-35 is a state-of-the-art fifth-generation military jet manufactured by the global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin, headquartered in the United States. The Swiss government’s purchase of the F-35A is linked to a commitment by Lockheed Martin to implement offset projects in Switzerland equal to 60 percent of the contract value. These projects benefit various sectors of Swiss industry, including aerospace.

    Under the offset agreement, Lockheed Martin will provide data and support to Pilatus to develop an advanced next-generation pilot training system, which will offer a training solution tailored to fifth-generation operators, and more specifically, F-35 nations.

    Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, emphasized: “We are delighted to have the support of armasuisse and Lockheed Martin. This technology transfer is a win-win situation for all three parties, and for Switzerland. Thanks to this cooperation, we can continue to supply our customers with the world’s most advanced training system.”

    The offset project received the armasuisse pre-approval early in 2024 and the agreements, including the statement of work, between Lockheed Martin and Pilatus were concluded during last summer.
