    A French A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport Phénix refueled U.S. and U.K. RC-135 aircraft during a historic exercise over central France, marking the first air-to-air refueling integration among the United States, United Kingdom and France within the RC-135 enterprise.

    Exercise Ravitaillement en Vol brought together a U.S. Air Force TC-135 training aircraft, a Royal Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint and a French Air and Space Force A330 MRTT Phénix. The event demonstrated how aircraft, crews and staff members from three NATO nations can operate as an increasingly integrated force.

    The milestone represented more than a successful connection between tanker and receiver aircraft. It established a pathway for U.S. and U.K. RC-135 fleets to access more than 30 allied A330 MRTT tankers worldwide, expanding the reach, persistence and flexibility of a critical NATO intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability.

    For the 55th Wing, which organizes, trains and equips the U.S. Air Force RC-135 fleet, the integration expands operational reach and flexibility across multiple theaters by increasing refueling options, extending time on station and giving commanders greater freedom to respond as mission demands evolve.

    Personnel from the 55th Wing, 55th Operations Group and Nebraska Air National Guard’s 170th Group participated alongside members of the RAF’s 51 and 56 squadrons at RAF Waddington and the French Air and Space Force’s 31st Air Refueling and Strategic Transport Wing.

    The multinational team conducted combined planning, simulator training, mission briefings and live refueling sorties. After several days of preparation, the team flew the key mission in designated refueling areas over central France.

    Operating in French national airspace required planners to coordinate through U.S., U.K. and French diplomatic channels to secure required clearances. The effort underscored that interoperability extends beyond compatible aircraft and requires nations to align procedures, communications, command relationships, airspace requirements and emergency actions. By synchronizing those elements, the three nations turned a historic first into a repeatable multinational capability.

    The exercise drew on testing conducted in October 2023 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, involving a Royal Australian Air Force KC-30A and a U.S. Air Force RC-135. A 170th Group member who participated in that test later helped plan the French integration.

    The close similarities between the Australian KC-30A and French A330 MRTT Phénix allowed planners to use data and lessons from Edwards to build the foundation for the June exercise. That continuity showed how allies can transform flight-test expertise into shared operational capability.

    By broadening the tanker network available to the RC-135 enterprise, the integration gives the United States and United Kingdom greater reach, persistence and freedom of action across multiple theaters. A distributed support network reduces reliance on any single nation, tanker fleet or operating location, allowing commanders to sustain ISR coverage when access or availability becomes constrained.

    That flexibility carries direct strategic value. Along NATO’s eastern flank, additional tanker capacity can help RC-135 crews remain on station longer, strengthening the alliance’s ability to monitor emerging threats and provide decision-makers with timely intelligence. In the Indo-Pacific, where distance shapes every operation, the same integration can extend ISR reach, increase endurance and improve responsiveness.

    The exercise also advanced readiness across the combined RC-135 force by creating new opportunities for more frequent, regionally accessible training with allied tankers. For the RAF, expanded access to French and other partner refueling platforms could increase training opportunities, accelerate crew development and provide greater flexibility in maintaining advanced qualifications. Those opportunities strengthen the readiness and resilience of the broader RC-135 enterprise for global operations.

    The three nations can now use lessons from Ravitaillement en Vol to refine common tactics, techniques and procedures and create a repeatable model for future multinational integration. Each successful event reduces friction and shortens the path from coordination to execution during real-world operations.

    Most importantly, the exercise demonstrated how allied relationships create operational advantage.

    The United States, United Kingdom and France did not simply place three national capabilities in the same airspace. They combined them into a single, mutually supporting force. That integration strengthens collective deterrence, increases NATO’s ability to sustain operations and complicates adversary planning and decision-making.

    For the RC-135 enterprise, the historic mission over France opened the door to a wider allied tanker network and a more resilient global operating model. For NATO, interoperability provides the foundation from which the alliance generates combat power, preserves decision advantage and remains ready to respond wherever the next challenge emerges.

    The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Rafale fleet has made history in Australia with its debut at Exercise Pitch Black.

    The IAF’s most advanced multirole fighter integrated into high-tempo, low-visibility scenarios, offering a rare opportunity to test the aircraft capabilities in a multinational coalition environment and operate smoothly in their concept of warfighting.

    For Group Captain Kumar, the exercise is far more than mere addition in flying hours and clocking safe and successful missions.

    He said the relationships forged on the ground were just as crucial as the missions flown overhead.

    “For the IAF, these connections are invaluable in reinforcing partnerships with like-minded nations and contributing to a cooperative, stable and secure Indo-Pacific,” Group Captain Kumar said.

    For an aircraft that is the cornerstone of India’s air combat capability, Pitch Black has provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the Rafale’s ability to operate seamlessly alongside international partners.

    Its debut at Pitch Black highlights both the aircraft’s versatility and the IAF’s growing capacity to contribute to complex multinational operations.

    As aircraft and crew return home, the lessons learned in the skies above northern Australia, and the relationships forged on the ground, will remain long lasting.

    For the IAF, the Rafale’s first appearance at Pitch Black marked not only a historic milestone, but another step forward in strengthening regional partnerships and defence cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.

    The exercise brought together around 100 aircraft and personnel from 19 nations, as well as NATO Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport Unit (MMU), to strengthen interoperability in the Indo-Pacific region.

    Exercise Pitch Black is the Royal Australian Air Force's largest international exercise, featuring complex, combat-like scenarios across one of the world's largest military training areas over a three-week period.

    Australia is one of NATO's partners in the Indo-Pacific region, alongside Japan, the Republic of Korea , and New Zealand.

    SEATTLE, Aug. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire(opens in a new tab)/ -- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has granted Boeing [NYSE: BA] an amended type certificate for the new 737-7 airplane, clearing it for commercial service.

    "This important certification validates the rigor of our airplane's design and recognizes the determination and resilience of our 737 MAX development team," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

    "Our team of dedicated engineers and test experts worked through challenges, an extended pandemic, and the transition to new certification processes," Pope added. "Through it all, our team stayed focused on completing all requirements and delivering a safe and more capable airplane to our customers."

    The smallest and longest-range member of the 737 MAX family, the 737-7 model serves an important market segment by offering 135 to 160 seats (in a two-class configuration) while providing about 10% more range potential than its siblings. Like other 737 MAX jets, the 737-7 reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions by 20% and noise footprint by 50% compared to the airplanes it typically replaces.

    The regulatory approval caps a multi-year certification effort in which Boeing demonstrated through comprehensive testing and analysis that the airplane meets all commercial aviation regulations. The test program, which began in 2018, included:

    More than 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing
    Extensive system safety analysis and human factors reviews
    An updated engine anti-ice system to address a potential condition that was discovered during flight testing

"With this certification program, Boeing has developed a clearer understanding of the latest regulatory requirements, which is expected to accelerate future airplane development with a renewed emphasis on human factors, safety and quality."

    Boeing and Southwest Airlines, the 737-7 launch customer, are preparing for delivery of the first airplane. A team is readying the first airplanes, including implementing updates to the airplane's final configuration.

    The 737 MAX family order book stands at more than 7,200 airplanes, of which more than 2,300 have been delivered through the end of June 2026.

    The 737-7 typically seats 135-160 passengers in a two-class configuration and offers a range of up to 3,800 nautical miles (7,040 km). The airplane is designed for exceptional performance for operators flying out of airports at high altitudes and hot climates.

    The other 737 MAX family members offer other unique capabilities:

    The 737-8 seats 160-180 passengers with a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km). It can profitably serve almost any short and medium-haul market.
    The 737-9 has three more seating rows than the 737-8 and serves 175-195 passengers with a range of up to 3,300 nautical miles (6,110 km).
    The 737-10, the largest in the family, offers the best per-seat economics of any single-aisle airplane. It seats 185-210 passengers with a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km). Boeing is working to certify the 737-10 this year.

    PLATTSBURGH, NY, and LOS ANGELES, CA, August 13, 2026 – Heart Aerospace today announced the successful first flight of the company’s X1 demonstrator aircraft. Spanning 106 feet, measuring 76 feet nose to tail, and weighing more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff, X1 is the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown.

    The flight took place on Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, at Heart’s X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport, a regional commercial airport serving a community of 20,000 people in upstate New York. The piloted mission lasted 27 minutes, during which X1 reached an altitude of 1,100 feet AGL and its all-electric propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power.

    The flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC), with a test profile that included taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing. The mission was designed to demonstrate all-electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations.

    Powered entirely by batteries, X1 used approximately $5 worth of electricity during its first flight. The flight came amid a sustained surge in global jet fuel prices, which averaged $3.50 per gallon for the week ending August 7, up 63% year over year, highlighting the potential for electric propulsion to deliver structurally lower aircraft operating costs while decoupling airlines from the volatility of global oil markets.

    X1 is a full-scale demonstrator representative of Heart’s ES-30 production aircraft, designed to validate key technologies, aerodynamics and flight performance, and Heart’s organizational capabilities. The ES-30 is a conventional fixed-wing, 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner being developed for FAA Part 25 certification. It has attracted customer commitments from major air carriers including United Airlines, Air Canada, and JSX.

    With entry into service targeted for 2031, Heart expects the ES-30 to reduce aircraft operating costs by more than 40% compared with legacy regional aircraft. This reduction is driven by lower energy costs, reduced maintenance requirements from simplified electric propulsion and electrified flight systems, and greater aircraft uptime and reliability enabled by an integrated electronics and software architecture.

    Heart foresees this cost advantage widening over time through advances in battery technology, technology-enabled gains in crew efficiency, and the ES-30’s low exposure to a growing range of emissions-related aviation taxes and fees worldwide.

    “Through the X1 program, Heart has built the capability to design, build, test, operate, and continuously improve a clean-sheet electric commercial aircraft,” said Ben Stabler, Chief Technology Officer. “We are carrying that full-stack capability directly into the ES-30, our first production aircraft and the foundation of a broader technology platform for electric airliners.”

    Heart is currently developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, with flight testing scheduled to begin in 2028.

    After positive identification, one of the Italian Eurofighters neutralised the potential threat over an unpopulated area. The entire activity was coordinated with NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany and Allied Air Command, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

    With the transition from Air Policing to Air Defence, NATO can now respond more flexibly to a wider range of threats, using a layered, 360-degree approach across all operational domains.

  • There is a global trend towards increasing military spending, and Canada is investing heavily to ensure its air force is ready for the variety of challenges it might face. The initial phase focuses on securing the best possible helicopter for its training programme.

    June 2026 saw the first delivery of the Airbus H135 to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), marking the launch of its Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) programme. Designated the CT-153 Juno, the helicopter’s name reflects its importance within the history of the nation's military. The Juno’s livery is composed of a dark blue mixed with historic "training yellow." This was deliberately chosen to ensure that one of the proudest chapters of Canadian aviation history, the British Commonwealth Air Training Program, where Canada played a massive role in preparing Allied pilots during the Second World War, remains a visible part of its present. The Juno aspect also calls to mind the critical role Canada had in the D-Day landings at Juno beach.

    Today, geopolitical tensions are as fraught as they have been since that global conflict. With active warfare in Europe and the Middle East, countries around the world are assessing if they have the right tools for the job. Canada is no different. SkyAlyne placed an order for 19 H135 helicopters to rejuvenate the RCAF’s training fleet, the first of which has now been received.

    The arrival of this aircraft is part of a complete reset of the RCAF’s training pipeline. With a total investment of 11.2 billion Canadian dollars, 71 new aircraft will be delivered over the course of the 25-year project.

    "The Future Aircrew Training programme is basically a reset of everything to do with RCAF aircrews training," explains Kevin Lemke, general manager for SkyAlyne. SkyAlyne, a joint venture formed by Canadian aviation and defence leaders CAE and KF Aerospace, serves as the prime contractor managing the initiative. "This is a generational programme for the Canadian government. It’s the largest services contract in the history of the Canadian government."

    Indeed, this is a root and branch modernisation of the RCAF’s training offer. Leadership has identified this step as building the essential foundations that will lead to the creation of an advanced air power. The logic is simple: if you want your air force to be the best, before you think about having the best aircraft, you have to have the pilots to fly them. “Doesn’t matter how much you buy,” notes Lemke. “If you don’t have the aircrews to operate these systems, you don’t have an air force."

    There is a school of thought that to really learn flying, you need to learn on a machine which doesn’t help you, so you train without the aid of sophisticated avionics that reduce pilot workload. Another theory is that training student pilots on cutting-edge helicopters introduces them to the kinds of technology early that they will encounter during their flying careers.

    The advantage of the H135 is that it not only allows pilots to train on Helionix avionics, but it also allows certain features and functionalities to be removed. Trainees experience the best of both worlds: next-generation technology and old-school fundamentals.

    In the context of having the right tools to train future pilots who are likely to face varied threats, the RCAF’s Colonel Lauri Denis believes that the CT-153 Juno perfectly fits the bill. "It’s exactly what today’s aircrew need to train on to then go to our advanced platforms and operational units to fight with our allies in the defence of Canada," Denis notes. "We don’t have to tell anybody here that the threat out there is real."

    The Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3 is expected to achieve Federal Aviation Administration certification this year. The aircraft’s flight test program has completed more than 880 flight test hours across two test articles thus far.
