Level 1I find this A/C to be VERY twitchy and stall prone.... The B model is woefully under armed and the D is very prone to spinning out in a hard turn... The plane is fast and very beautiful... but it's also as fragile as an eggshell.... I would take a P-47 over the P-51 every time....Hell, even a P-38, for that matter..... Thoughts?... this is just a personal preference, but I may be flying the Mustang all wrong as well......

Level 6Honestly, I still like the P-40. I know it's not that good a plane, but it got a lot of kills and accomplished many impressive feats. Flying Tigers, Pearl Harbor defense, they just keep proving themselves

Level 1I think that the p-40 is the most underestimated plane in the sim....It's great down low and manuevrable as hell...below 3000M, the P-40 will clean a P-51's clock.... Against a boom and zoom P-47....that's up for discussion... Like the Pony, but love the Jug....... a better battle plane all around..

AdminThe P-51 is not a turning fighter, never was meant to be. It takes a certain touch to fly it properly. The sim also doesn't allow you to manually control the fuselage fuel tank, which when full (it was the first tank drained in long-range missions) could cause problems when maneuvering.
The P-47 has a poor reputation due to it's size and ability to carry ridiculous amounts of ordnance, which when combined with a shorter range (at least for early models) caused many to feel it was better suited to a ground support role. In actuality, the Jug was an excellent high-altitude fighter, according to many people superior to the P-51 above 20-25,000 feet.
It's worth noting that IL-2 was developed to simulate air combat on the Eastern Front (and fighting altitudes were generally lower). Many have felt that it does not do as well representing flight above 20k feet as it does down low. -
Level 6In my early pilot days (Birds of Steel, not as realistic but still very fun to play), I was always the guy with the bomber. I have hit over 400 ground targets in versus, more than half using the B-24D. Still, when people are strafing you, or there are too many fighters for your gunners to handle, that when you make the choice. A choice that determines the rest of the match: Use the P-47D. I have yet to be shot down in one, and it's amazing strafing and dogfighting. Still, for a normal 1 v 1 dogfight, I'll take the P-40 any day.

Level 1It must be that fuselage tank...I've noticed that it is the LAST tank to run out of fuel... I usually B&Z in the P-51, but as Jarink noted, it's not a turner.. The Jug can also out-roll it by a wide margin.... I have found that virtually any Bf-109 (G-6 and later) has it all over the P-51, at least in the crucial first stages of a fight...Just my opinion...Once the P-51 can use it's speed to separate from the 109, it can start to dictate the fight..... Guess I'll stick to my Jug in European skies and my Hog in the Pacific... Mustang sure is pretty, though....

Level 1Give me a FW-190D9 any day over a P-51 ,as long as i have fuel for the dang thing!
