7 years agoTue May 02 2017, 12:02amAdminReally nice looking skins!
One thing I would point out is the colour of the scalloped area behind the cockpit underneath the rear glazing.
I don't know what the Soviets did when they repainted them (like in your first pic) but in the second pic where the aircraft is still wearing its original olive drab that area under the rear glazing should also be olive drab. Here are some original colour photos of different models of P-40 showing what I mean. The first two are E models, the third is a B or C and the last is an N.
Cheers,

AdminAlso for reference of the Medium Green splotches on the wings and tail surfaces, you can see it on the last photo of my previous post but also here is good reference photo:

7 years agoTue May 02 2017, 04:16pmThanks a lot guys !
I'm painting with this views > http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/lendlease/p-40/p-40.html
Some are olive drab, some are not...But of course I know it may be wrong so I will correct this rear canopy !
I suppose that splotches were made on the fields with russian paintings so I'm not sure that CBI P40s are a reference on this point (?)
I was looking for some pics to see underwings weathering but I did not find a lot. May be you've got some ?

AdminLooking good
I'm not at home at the moment but when I get back I shall see if I have any good photos of the underside weathering.
As for the splotches, they were applied at the factory and were sprayed on without a template which is why they vary a lot in size and shape. Curtiss used it a lot on the P-40 however off the top of my head I have seen photos of B-17, B-26 and C-47 aircraft with them as well.

AdminIt can be hard to find clear photos of the undersurfaces weathering!
Still, maybe these will help. The first is of an AVG P-40 in Burma which shows under wing weathering on a combat aircraft. The second is of an RAAF P-40 in New Guinea on a very muddy airfield, far more dirty than what you want but a good example of the dirt/mud splash pattern.
Two other things I thought about which might interest you:
- On the upper surface of each wing is a line which shows where it is safe to walk. On the colour profiles you linked they show as red but should be black (like in the last photo of my first post).
- The camouflage pattern in those profiles looks the same as those painted on P-40s by Curtiss that were built for a RAF order, so could be a faded scheme of DuPont versions of Dark Earth and Dark Green with Sky undersurfaces. -
