AdminThanks for the link Juri, I just watched that this evening and like Jaypack said, great footage and stories.

AdminWell, I may have gotten myself in over my head on this one... I just found this site:http://adf-serials.com.au/ and downloaded every single Aussie beaufighter photo I could find- it's a gold mine for anyone looking to skin Australian or New Zealand a/c. I'd say it'd be safe to assume at least one aussie skinpack will be on the way, on top of the generics and possibly some ETO skins...

AdminIn fact, you could say that with all these new reference pics, the
's the limit!
(sorry, I couldn't resist! )

Yep, adfseriels is a cool site, I used it ages ago when I did a pack of RAAF Mustangs in the KTO. -
AdminIt's a shame Rock's template isn't available anymore... This is what I was able to scrounge together using Jester's Mk Vb/IX template, and lines traced from the default...

11 years agoMon Apr 15 2013, 11:31pmAdminMan she looks great! I really like the colours and the worn feeling of it all.
I'll need to check up on this when I get back home but I think the black walkway lines on the upper surfaces of the wings may have been different between port and starboard on early Spits (I came across a reference to it while reading up for my Spit XI skins but didn't follow it up at the time ), also I believe the gun cam hole (in the starboard wing root of this pic) was located in the port wing root on Mk I to VI Spits.

AdminThanks for the input! I really know next to nothing (relatively speaking, or course) about spitfires, so any info/nitpicks, etc that you have would be awesome!

AdminAfter having a quick look around on the web and through some books I feel pretty damn confident that the black line on the starboard wing went all the way to the root were the upper surface starts blending with the fuselage (see the last pic in this thread from Duggy for an example http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?3676), apparently only the port wing inboard walkway had the thicker gauge skin needed for supporting a person's weight... although there are, of course, pics showing ground crew ignoring that and standing on the starboard root as well
I don't know if there's a hard and fast rule about the introduction of thicker skin to the starboard wing but from what I can see it was something that was gradually phased in with the MkV, probably both on the production lines and at repair/maintenance units; I've seen photos of both MkVs with the symmetrical walkways and early MkIXs (converted from MkVs) with the earlier style walkways.
The gun cam (when fitted) was in the port wing root for the Mk I to VI then moved to the starboard wing with the introduction of the Merlin 60 series (on the MkIX) as its place was used for the fuel cooler. Later, when the fuel cooler wasn't needed anymore, the camera could be mounted in either wing root.
Clear as mud? -

I often check modeling sites when doing research, as these guys are as fanatical as you skinners, for perfection.
