A few questions for Spitfire experts. When did the Mk.XIV first saw combat? Was it flown by many squadrons in mid-1944? I guess the Mk. IX with C-wing was the most common type over Normandy, right?

The Mk.XIV entered service in early 1944 but was on defensive operations only (except for a few offensive flights over the invasion area), so as far as I know the first time it fired it's guns in anger was when the V-1 offensive began.

As for the squadrons equipped with the Mk.XIV:
41sqn = September '44 onwards
91sqn = March to August '44
130sqn = August '44 onwards
322sqn = March to August '44
402sqn = August '44 onwards
610sqn = January '44 till it was disbanded in March '45

Yes, the C wing was the most common for the Mk.IX, I don't know about the ADGB but in the 2nd TAF there was only two squadrons with the E wing so the rest would have the C wing.

Thank you for the information. So obviously the Mk.XIV, like the Arado, makes more sense for Bodenplatte than Normandy.
I hope the Spitfire Mk. IX will at least get a C-Wing as modification.
