Hi all,
I came across this video which I found rather interesting as it explained and clarified some things I had noticed in the wartime footage of Coastal Command Beaufighters and Mosquitos attacking shipping in the Norwegian fjords, namely the very long ranges that they would fire their cannons at as well as why their RPs would fall short, sometimes very short, of the targeted ships.
Cheers

AdminHighly interesting! I knew that Coastal Command pilots tried to penetrate the hull below the waterline, but that rockets could travel 180 feet below water and still penetrate the hull was completely new to me.
Of course I immediately tried to reproduce it in Il-2 GB and unsurprisingly it doesn't work. I don't think any flight sim has ever simulated this. -

I wonder if there's info out there on how the RP warheads would perform underwater and how it'd vary with changes in velocity, depth and impact angle etc... iirc CC kept using torpedoes right to the end of the war so I assume the RPs were pretty limited in how thick a hull they could damage.
In regards to flight sims, I see in the latest interview with Jason that CP is working on a model with both rigid and soft body physics, I admit I don't really know what the latter means but I wonder if it would include how objects interact with water e.g. how cleanly a torpedo will enter the water or if a bomb will skip if the sea is smooth enough... maybe there's potential there for something like how the RP works underwater. Which makes me wonder if the American HVAR could do the same thing and if so did the US use it that way
