12 years agoMain AdminPatrol planes fly over DesRon20 destroyers, during an exhibition staged for Movietone News off San Diego, California, 14 September 1936. Planes include one XPY3-1 of Patrol Squadron 11 (foreground), flying in formation with three P2Ys of Patrol Squadron 7.
Consolidated XP3Y-1 Catalina Patrol Bomber from VP-11 Squadron. Aircraft 11-P-1 BuNo. A-9459. This was the only model XP3Y-1 made.
Consolidated PBY-1 BuNo. 0102 delivered VP-6F Squadron, with True Blue tail.
Delivered 05 Oct. 1936 to 29 January 1937 North Island, San Diego, California. Delivered to Unit VP-6F and assigned Unit S/N 6-P-6
Damaged 21 Nov. 1941, Jacksonville Fl. Starboard float strut fitting sprung and attaching revets sheared; skin wrinkled in way of above fitting; starboard "B" strut sprung and skin wrinkled; skin wrinkled on top of wing around second rib.
Date: 10 Jan. 1939; Units: VP-9 VP-10; Enroute to Coco Solo from North Island Flt led by Capt Marc Mitscher, ComPatWing ONE 48 A/C - largest grp of A/C to fly 3,000 mi.
This is actually an 18-plane trans-Pac from San Diego to Pearl Harbor on 1938-Jan-18. VP-9 had six PBY-1's (BuNos 0137-0142) and VP-10 had twelve PBY-2's.

AdminLove the early Cats. Once upon a time I had a dream to buy a Catalina and fly it all over the country and Canada. It would be the ideal fishin' plane!
