Level 2Too easy this time...
It's a Grumman FF "Fifi", the first carrier aircraft with retractable landing gear. -
Main AdminNo not correct, but on the right path ???
-
Level 2Oh, I see...
I didn't do any research as I thought: "I know this one" the moment I saw it...
So, since the plane in the photo has Spanish markings,
should be one of the 34 GE-23 Delfin
(export variant of the Canadian built version of the FF the G-23 Goblin) -
Main AdminWell done it is.
"The Canadian Car & Foundry Co acquired a manufacturing licence for the G-23, and improved FF-1, of which it completed a total of 52, some of which were assembled from US-built components. Thirty-four were acquired by the Spanish Republican Government in 1937 by presenting forged Turkish credentials. This batch was built primarily to bypass the US embargo placed on belligerents during the Spanish Civil War. Referred to as the GE-23 Delfin by the Spanish Republican Air Force, the aircraft fought in the conflict, but were outclassed by opposing fighters and losses were high. Despite this, a victory against a Heinkel He 59B would be the only recorded "kill" by a Grumman biplane fighter. Eleven survived to serve in the Ej?rcito del Aire Espa?ol, nicknamed Pedro Rico for its rotundity."
And the prize of course. -

Level 2The Northrop 3A
In 1935 as aircraft technology was rapidly advancing, the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was looking to replace its mainstay fighter, the Boeing P-26 Peashooter. The Peashooter was considered an interim fighter and had been conservative in design with external wing bracing and fixed landing gear. New designs were now being sought after to usher in a completely new era of the American fighter. New concepts included all-metal construction, enclosed cockpits, retractable landing gear, hydraulic systems and more powerful engines. The USAAC called for a competition and designs were submitted by Curtiss, Seversky and Northrop for a fly-off on June 18, 1935.1
Completed in July 1935, Northrop submitted the A3 (XP-948, c/n 44), which was based on the design of the Northrop XFT. It which was a low-wing all-metal semi-monocoque monoplane with fully-retractable main landing gear, an enclosed cockpit and powered by a Pratt & Whitney 700 hp (522 kW), SR-1535-6 Twin Wasp Junior engine, driving a three-blade propeller. It was unarmed but had provisions for the standard armament for the time, which consisted of one .30 caliber and one .50 caliber machine guns in the fuselage.

Main AdminIt looks like it but it isn't, this first flew 29th March 1936????????
-
Level 2Should be the Vought V-150 Single-seat Fighter Monoplane (525 h.p. Pratt & Whitney "Wasp-Junior" engine) then...no?

9 years agoFri Aug 07 2015, 05:54pmMain Admin"was finally purchased by Japan in July 1937"
1 ? Pratt & Whitney R-1535-SB4G air-cooled radial engine, 825 hp (615 kW) -
9 years agoFri Aug 07 2015, 06:13pmLevel 2Grrrr.... they are almost identical...!!!
The general arrangement drawing illustrates the Vought V-143 in its final form as exported to Japan in July 1937, the sideviews illustrating (top to bottom) the original Northrop 3-A, the V-141 as initially flown, and the V-143
BTW, the one in your photo looks more like the V-141...
