11 years agoMain AdminThe FAA Museum unveiled the restoration of their Martlet on July 11th. Like the Corsair that was carefully conserved a few years ago, the paint that had been applied to the Martlet in the 1960's when prepared for display was carefully sanded back, revealing the original colors in which it left the Grumman factory. Unfortunately, much of the fuselage had to be stripped back to bare metal, but the lines of the original camouflage pattern were discernible, and the new paint was matched to the preserved original samples on the wings and elsewhere on the airframe. About 50% of the exterior finish on the Martlet is original.

Level 1Why can't I have a Wildcat/Martlet to fly around?

11 years agoMain AdminWell if you could somehow bribe the US Navy, & get the backers, there was approx 200 aircraft that ditched in The Great Lakes, & are still there.

AdminSupposedly the Fighter Factory (aka Military Aircraft Museum) in Virginia Beach is selling off most of their flyers and will be a static-only museum. Maybe they'd be willing to part with their Wildcat.

AdminI only just now checked out Duggy's link... and wow, it's great to see those Grumman applied colours in colour! I had seen b/w WW2 photos of course so it's real interesting to see that the green is certainly more vibrant than I imagined.
