RAF Typhoon fighter jets have returned to Romania to continue the NATO enhanced Air Policing mission.

The fighters are from Number II (Army Co-operation) Squadron and are normally based at RAF Lossiemouth. They have now joined 135 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) at Mihail Kogalniceanu Airbase near Constanta in southeast Romania

Wing Commander Chris Ball, in charge of 135 EAW said, ?This is an important role for us that will build upon the success of last year?s mission to help to secure NATO airspace in the Black Sea region. These are interesting times but from the Black Sea to the Baltics, NATO?s resolve is steadfast to defend itself against any threat?

The EAW is based at RAF Leeming and consists of 150 personnel, including those from II (AC) Sqn, and are drawn from stations across the country to form a unit capable of carrying out all the necessary support activities to maintain a fast jet operational force.

The RAF will carry out its enhanced Air Policing role in the region from May until September. Once again, the RAF will be flying in partnership with Romanian MiG-21 LanceR aircraft.

EVERETT, Wash., April 26, 2018 ? Boeing?s [NYSE: BA] KC-46 tanker program has now completed all required Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) flight tests following a successful refueling/communications flight with a C-17 Globemaster III.

The STC encompasses the military systems installed on the 767-2C aircraft to make it a tanker, and is one of two required FAA airworthiness certifications. Boeing will now submit the resulting data and reports to the FAA for review in advance of the STC award.

?This is a huge milestone for the program and moves us closer to first KC-46 delivery,? said Mike Gibbons, Boeing KC-46A tanker vice president and program manager. ?We?ve got the best of Boeing working together to ensure the Air Force is getting a game-changing tanker with unmatched capabilities.?

As part of STC testing, the combined Boeing/Air Force team had to validate both the boom and drogue systems for aerial refueling with multiple receiver aircraft. They also demonstrated the KC-46 can take on fuel from KC-135, KC-10 and other KC-46 tankers, conducted night and day lighting tests and tested the aircraft defensive systems and avionics.

"While the majority of our testing was conducted out of Boeing Field in Seattle, we connected with assets out of Nellis and Edwards Air Force Bases and also travelled to Naval Air Station Patuxent River for centerline drogue system testing,? said Jeanette Croppi, KC-46 test program manager. ?This was truly a great team effort.?

Boeing previously received its Amended Type Certificate from the FAA for its core 767-2C configuration in December 2017. The 767-2C is a modified version of the company?s commercial 767 with revised structure, wiring and plumbing.

The program has six aircraft that have supported various segments of ATC and STC testing. Overall they have completed 2,900 flight hours as well as more than 2,500 ?contacts? during refueling flights with F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B, C-17, A-10, KC-10 and KC-46 aircraft.

The KC-46, derived from Boeing?s commercial 767 airframe, is built in the company?s Everett, Wash., facility. Boeing is currently on contract for the first 34 of an expected 179 tankers for the U.S. Air Force.

The KC-46A is a multirole tanker that can refuel all allied and coalition military aircraft compatible with international aerial refueling procedures and can carry passengers, cargo and patients.

Debuted on the Global 7000 aircraft, the Nuage design centres upon passenger comfort and ergonomic perfection
Brings first meaningful change in operation and design of a business aircraft seat in 30 years
Introduces revolutionary patented tilt link system for unprecedented comfort
Features an all-new deep recline position for the ultimate in relaxation on long-haul flights
Precision-engineered with the first-ever fully floating base and centre swivel axis
Equipped with a unique tilting headrest for added support

Bombardier Business Aircraft has unveiled the Nuage, its industry-redefining seat on the Global 7000 aircraft, with the first new seat architecture in business aviation in 30 years. Within the fluid lines of its exceptionally crafted exterior is a marvel of furniture engineering, meticulously designed to achieve optimal comfort in flight.

?In designing the Nuage seat, we examined every conceivable passenger need and comfort that might arise while seated in flight and launched our process from there,? said Peter Likoray, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Bombardier Business Aircraft. ?This empathetic design philosophy inspired us to craft a seat unlike any other ? the most innovative seat the industry has seen in three decades. Offering an unprecedented balance of comfort and control, Nuage is an ergonomic and aesthetic masterpiece that redefines the very notion of seated comfort for life above the clouds.?

Designed to maximize comfort and relaxation on long-haul flights, Nuage introduces an all-new, ergonomically-perfected deep recline position ? unavailable on any other business aircraft. Unlike other aircraft seats where only the back reclines, pushing the body forward and leading to discomfort, the Nuage features a patented tilt link system that dips the seat as the back is reclined, keeping the body fully supported with no added pressure on the legs. This dynamic movement is the result of years of research and development, and it serves to support and cradle the body like no other aircraft seat in the industry.

The Nuage seat also features a fluid movement system and patented floating base, which allows the seat to track and swivel naturally and effortlessly and without visible floor rails, further enhancing its streamlined look. The fluid movement system also includes a centre swivel axis for an intuitively centred point of rotation in any position, allowing the passenger to swivel with ease and remarkable precision.

For added comfort and support, the Nuage seat is equipped with a tilting headrest ? also unavailable on any other seat in business aviation. Thoughtfully engineered, this adjustable headrest provides optimal neck support in every position while helping to maintain an effortless line of sight when watching TV or reading in a reclined position.

Offered in a vast selection of leathers, fabrics and finishes, the Nuage seat brings the most desirable aesthetic and functional features of luxury seating into the cabin.

The Global 7000 aircraft, the most spacious and longest-range business jet ever built, is on track to enter service during the second half of 2018. With a maximum operation range of 7,700 nautical miles, the Global 7000 aircraft can fly farther and connect more city pairs than any other business jet. The Global 7000 is the only business aircraft that can connect New York and Hong Kong, and Singapore to San Francisco.*

On any flight, short or long, the Global 7000 aircraft?s advanced wing optimizes speed, range and control, and ensures an exceptionally smooth ride.

With its four true living spaces, the Global 7000 aircraft is unique among business jets in spaciousness, luxurious comfort and design flexibility. Its leading-edge cabin entertainment system, coupled with ultra-fast connection speeds via Ka-band, allows passengers to stream high-definition content and enjoy a reliable entertainment experience. The Global 7000 aircraft?s modern and multi-functional kitchen features unprecedented storage space for an exceptional dining experience.

May 3, 2018 Montr?al Commercial Aircraft, Press Release
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that it has signed a firm order for 15 new CRJ900 regional jets with American Airlines, Inc. (?American?). The purchase agreement also includes options on an additional 15 CRJ900 aircraft. Based on the list price of the CRJ900 aircraft, the firm order is valued at approximately US$ 719 million.

Upon delivery, American will be benefiting from the latest enhancement to the CRJ Series regional jets ? the Atmosph?re cabin, which offers an enhanced passenger experience and can accommodate the largest number of ?oversized? roller bags of any aircraft in the same category.

?We are pleased with American?s continued confidence in Bombardier and the CRJ900 aircraft,? said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. ?This order is a testament to the tremendous value that the CRJ Series provides to airlines in the North American regional market. With its outstanding economics and new cabin design, the CRJ900 continues to offer unique revenue growth opportunities, while delivering the most modern regional jet cabin features in line with today?s trends and requirements.?

American has selected PSA Airlines to operate the 15 CRJ900 in dual-class configuration with 76 seats, including 12 first class seats.

The airline intends to take delivery of their first aircraft with the new interior in the second quarter of 2019.

    About the Atmosph?re Cabin
The new Atmosph?re cabin sets new standards of passenger experience in the regional jet market segment. Key features of the new interior are comprised of larger passenger living space, wheel-first roller bag capability, more spacious lavatory, increased cabin connectivity options, all integrated in a contemporary design and material choices. In fact, the Atmosph?re cabin design allows each passenger to carry and store an ?oversized? roller bag within the aircraft cabin bins which minimizes the need to check bags at the counter or the gate. A new solar electric unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which has the potential to fly for up to a year before needing maintenance, has become a step closer to reality following a new agreement between two cutting-edge British companies, BAE Systems and Prismatic.

Engineers from Prismatic and BAE Systems will collaborate on the development of the new solar powered High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) UAV known as PHASA-35?, with work already underway to prepare the first aircraft to be ready for flight tests in 2019.

The technology would offer a year-round, low cost persistent service for a wide range of needs including surveillance and vital communications to remote areas, using only the sun to power the aircraft during the day and recharge the batteries for overnight operation.

Solar HALE vehicles offer a significantly cheaper alternative to conventional satellite technology, with PHASA-35? (standing for Persistent High Altitude Solar Aircraft), being a concept solar electric UAV that uses proven, long life battery technology and ultra-lightweight solar cells to potentially maintain flight for up to 12 months.

The PHASA-35? concept has a 35-metre wingspan and weighs just 150kg ? its lightweight, efficient build allows it to fly at high altitudes for long periods of time.

A quarter scale model (named PHASE-8?) completed a successful maiden flight in 2017, with Prismatic Ltd and BAE Systems now looking to take the technology a step further.

BAE Systems will invest in the development and flight testing of the PHASA-35? system as part of its drive to continually develop new technologies to support aircraft of the future, working collaboratively with SMEs and academia.

BAE Systems has a portfolio of patents and patent applications covering approximately 2000 inventions internationally, and under the agreement with Prismatic, it will provide expertise in aerospace technology and project management to progress the PHASA-35? programme through to a marketable offering.

Royal Air Force Typhoons based in Romania have been launched as a response to a Russian aircraft operating near NATO airspace over the Black Sea.

Operating from the Romanian Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base near Constanta on the Black Sea coast, the RAF Typhoons responded to a Russian Federation Air Force IL-20, NATO codename Coot, heading west near NATO airspace.

The Russian military jets were flying over the western Black Sea and were monitored by the Typhoons in accordance with the NATO Enhanced Air Policing (EAP) mission the RAF are conducting in Romania. The IL-20 Coot was tracked as it departed North East but the aircraft did not come within visual range of each other.

The RAF mission in Romania is part of NATO?s Assurance Measures introduced in 2014. At the time, the Alliance started implementing these Assurance Measures with the goal to demonstrate the collective resolve of Allies, demonstrate the defensive nature of NATO and deter the threat of Russian aggression against NATO Allies.

?Today?s scramble, so early in our mission, proves that we have successfully reintegrated into the NATO air policing system from our base here in Romania. Across the Wing, from our drivers to our technicians, our intelligence staff to the pilots, the team has performed their roles exceptionally well and so I can say with confidence that we are providing effective air policing for the Alliance.?
