Royal Air Force personnel have been participating in one of Europe?s largest air power exercises involving nearly 100 aircraft and 4000 personnel from nine nations.

Squadron Leader Mike Garland from IX(B) Squadron on Exercise Arctice Challenge 2015Situated on the Norwegian coast inside the Arctic Circle, Bodo Airbase has been temporary home to eight RAF Tornado GR4 deployed from both RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Marham. The multi-national training, Arctic Challenge 15 (ACE 15), has been hosted by the Nordic Partnership for Peace (PfP) nations of Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Leading the detachment, Squadron Leader Mike Garland from IX(B) Squadron based at RAF Marham said:

?It?s very difficult when we?re training in the UK to work with so many different partners and such a large number of aircraft. To come to an exercise such as this gives us a great opportunity to work with many different types of aircraft, to try and overcome some of the language barriers and gain some valuable training in large package operations.?

  • F-16 Durability Testing: 25,000 Hours and Counting

Simulated test flight hours triple that of F-16 design service life certification

An F-16 undergoes durability testing in Lockheed Martin?s Full Scale Durability Test (FSDT) facility in Fort Worth, Texas, where the fighter recently completed more than 25,000 hours of simulated flight time. Video: Lockheed Martin

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 11, 2015 ? Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) recently completed 25,000 hours of simulated flight time on an F-16C Block 50 aircraft, demonstrating the safety and durability of the F-16 well beyond the aircraft?s original design service life of 8,000 Equivalent Flight Hours (EFH). Further testing is being conducted to identify a definitive, safe flight hour limit for the aircraft.

The F-16 Full Scale Durability Test (FSDT) applies stress to the aircraft?s structure to represent actual aircraft usage and identify potential fatigue issues. FSDT results will be used to help design and verify Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) structural modifications for the U.S. Air Force and to support F-16 service life certification to 12,000 EFH. The SLEP aims to extend the service life of up to 300 F-16C/D Block 40-50 aircraft.

The SLEP and related avionics upgrades to the Air Force?s F-16C/D fleet can safely and effectively augment the current fighter force structure as U.S. and allied combat air fleets recapitalize with F-35 Lightning IIs.

?This testing milestone clearly demonstrates that F-16s with SLEP modifications can be safely operated longer than anyone previously thought possible,? said Rod McLean, vice president and general manager of the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin. ?Enhanced F-16V capabilities?an option for both upgrades and new production aircraft?means that F-16s will remain relevant well into the future. This should provide additional confidence to current F-16 operators and potential new F-16 customers.?

For more than 40 years, the F-16 has proven itself as the world?s most capable 4th Generation multi-role fighter, serving as the workhorse of the fighter fleet for 28 customers around the world. The F-16V, the latest F-16 configuration, includes numerous enhancements designed to keep the F-16 at the forefront of international security.

A Royal Air Force squadron has deployed eight Typhoon multi-role aircraft to participate in a leading air warfighting exercise in Turkey.

Exercise Anatolian Eagle is being hosted by the Turkish Air Force at Konya Airbase, where XI Squadron are operating with squadrons from Germany, Spain, Pakistan and the United States and a significant number of jet fighters from the host nation.

Over the course of two weeks RAF fighter pilots from the RAF Coningsby based squadron will fly a series of increasingly complex training sorties designed to enhance interoperability, cooperation and understanding between the participating nations.

Anatolian Eagle is a Turkish Air Force national Ex with participants from Germany, Pakistan, US, Spain, NATO AEW Force and the UK.

The Ex is designed to increase the operational training level of aircrew and air defence personnel in a simulated, but realistic operational environment.

It is also designed to exercise and develop joint and combined operations. The RAF participation is 8 x Typhoon aircraft from XI Sqn RAF Coningsby. The Exercise is held at the 3rd Main Jet Base Konya between the 8th - 19th June 2015.

ALMDALE, California, June 16, 2015 ? Raytheon Company [NYSE: RTN] and Bombardier (TSX: BBD.B) have teamed with Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] to deliver a low-risk, affordable solution for the United States Air Force?s JSTARS Recapitalization program.

Embracing the United States government?s desire for strong industry partnerships, the Lockheed Martin-led team will provide the Air Force capabilities superior to the current JSTARS. The team will also deliver a true open system architecture to allow the government to own the technical baseline for future upgrades and reduce life cycle cost.

?Our track record of performance in systems integration and leadership in Open Mission Systems, combined with our teammates? relevant products and in-depth experience, give us confidence that we can provide the Air Force the best possible solution,? said Rob Weiss, executive vice president and general manager, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Advanced Development Programs (the Skunk Works?).

Lockheed Martin will serve as the lead systems integrator for the program and Raytheon will bring to the team their experience with ground surveillance, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, mission systems integration, and JSTARS communications.

"ISR and mission systems integration are core capabilities for us," said Rick Yuse, president of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. "We are committed to building modular, easily adapted and upgraded open systems to help our warfighters stay ahead of future threats."

Bombardier will provide its ultra-long-range Global business jet platform, which is less expensive to operate than modern airliners and is uniquely suited to the JSTARS mission by allowing the on-board radar to see further and deeper into valleys and survey the battlespace for extended periods of time without refueling.

?The track record we built over the past years with the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) program for the Air Force using the Bombardier Global platform makes us very well-positioned in this market segment,? added St?phane Villeneuve, vice president, Specialized Aircraft, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

    17 June 2015 Press Release

Airbus has signed an agreement with Singapore-based ST Aerospace to offer passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion solutions for its A320 / A321 aircraft. The agreement was signed today at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget by Harald Wilhelm, Chief Financial Officer of Airbus Group and Airbus, Serh Ghee Lim, President of ST Aerospace, Andreas Sperl, CEO of EFW and Tom Williams, Airbus Chief Operating Officer.

Airbus foresees a significant market demand of more than 600 aircraft over the next 20 years for P2F aircraft conversions in the small freighter segment. The A320P2F, with eleven main-deck container positions, will be capable of carrying 21 metric tonnes of payload over 2,100nm, while the A321P2F with 14 main-deck positions will be able to carry up to 27 tonnes over 1,900nm. The first converted A321P2F will be delivered in 2018.

The A320/A321 P2F converted aircraft will be marketed and managed by Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW). Airbus currently holds a majority stake at the Dresden-based freighter conversion specialist together with its partner and co-owner, ST Aerospace. In order to implement the new business line for A320 / A321 P2F aircraft, ST Aerospace will provide its specially developed conversion technology and will obtain another 20 percent of EFW?s shares, thus increasing its stake in EFW to 55 percent. Subsequently, Airbus Group will become a minority partner in EFW, reducing its shareholding to 45 percent.

Harald Wilhelm, Airbus Group Chief Financial Officer said: ?This freighter conversion agreement is a great new step for our highly successful A320 family programme, boosting the longevity of the aircraft and enhancing value for aircraft owners and investors.? He added: ?It will also provide new business opportunities to EFW with ST Aerospace being the ideal partner for this initiative, given its strong engineering development capabilities on our existing cooperation for A330 conversions.?

Serh Ghee Lim, President of ST Aerospace said: "As a centre of excellence for freighter conversions with strong engineering capabilities across multiple aircraft platforms, ST Aerospace is pleased to include this new collaboration which will extend our conversion portfolio and enhance our value-added proposition to customers worldwide." He continued: "The A320P2F and the A321P2F will be excellent workhorses which would offer aircraft operators great value and efficiency."

Tom Williams, Airbus Chief Operating Officer said: ?The A320/A321 P2F is the only Airbus-supported A320 Family freighter conversion programme, and as such will take full benefit of our inherent design knowledge of the aircraft, our engineering know-how, as well as the extensive operational experience from the thousands of Airbus single-aisle aircraft in service today.? He added: ?We are therefore confident this will be the best solution for freight operators and we?re pleased to collaborate with EFW and ST Aerospace to make this happen.?

The management team in Dresden will continue to be headed by President and CEO Andreas Sperl and will ensure sustainable growth of the Airbus P2F freighter family while strengthening EFW?s position as a global Airbus conversions supplier. In addition, the operation will secure value-adding jobs in the Dresden region.

Together with the larger A330F and A330P2F, the A320P2F and A321P2F will further complement the Airbus Freighter Family concept. Airlines will thus benefit from the flight-crew and operational commonality through Cross-Crew-Qualification and Mixed-Fleet-Flying across their Airbus freighter and passenger operations, leveraging on same cockpit and systems philosophies.

The Secretary of State for Defence, the Right Honourable Michael Fallon MP learnt at first-hand what policing the Baltic airspace means during yesterday?s visit to Amari airbase in Estonia.

The day had seen two scrambles (17th), one the previous night (16th) and one this morning (18th) bringing the total to four scrambles in barely over 24 hours from the Royal Air Force Typhoons based at Amari.

Two Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons landed just an hour before the Minister touched down. In just over 24 hours the tally of RAF intercepts has included four MiG-31BM Foxhound fighters, two Tu-22M3 Backfire C bombers, two An-26 Curl surveillance aircraft and an A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning and control aircraft.

The week was expected to be busy, because the multinational summer Baltic exercises always attract overflights.

Typhoon pilot, Flt Lt Oli Fleming, speaking of Tuesday night, said : ?With a no notice scramble I made a Mach 1.5 transit to identify aircraft that had not filed a flight plan and were not ?squawking? (communicating). We got alongside to see a pair of MiG 31s. It?s the first time I?ve seen this type of MiG. They were in international airspace flying into Kaliningrad.?

On Wednesday morning it was the turn of 6 Squadron colleague, Major Ryan Franzen, on exchange from the US Marine Corps who spoke of his first mission of the day: ?The Typhoon gets high, gets fast and gets there quick. We made a visual ID of Tu-22s. There was no real reaction. A little wave of the wings. It?s a safe procedure. They know what we?re doing.?

It didn?t end there. Maj Franzen and his wingman were re-tasked twice more on the same mission to intercept two pairs of Foxhounds. He added: ?It was exciting - especially scrambling for one task and then having to do two more. This is great for the ground engineers. They make it possible.?

Just three hours later they were scrambled again ? this time locating surveillance aircraft ? an An-26 and an An-50. His wingman said: ? It?s what we are here to do. It is a lot to see in one day, but this activity is routine for us. When we hear the scramble it?s very automatic ? but there?s a big surge of energy and a big adrenaline rush.?

Estonian Minister of Defence Sven Mikser greeted Michael Fallon and referred to the danger posed to commercial aviation by aircraft in the Baltic region without flight plans. He said: ?Estonia is grateful for the British contribution to our security. We have had close co-operation and we hope it will continue.?

Wg Cdr Stu Smiley commands the RAF detachment, 121 Expeditionary Air Wing: ?We have been here nearly two months and flown about 120 sorties. Twenty-one of these have been scrambles and the rest for training. We have identified just over a dozen aircraft with unidentified or uncertain flight plans. This level of activity is a little higher than normal ? but that?s to be expected given the major exercises taking place.? He added: ?Being in a position to be able to achieve this mission so effectively is a credit to every single person here. EAWs enable the RAF to deploy rapidly, set-up and execute the required mission. And we do it worldwide where the UK needs us.?

EVERETT, Wash., June 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today released a follow-up to its popular 787-9 Dreamliner demonstration video, bringing the public into the flight deck as Boeing's expert crew rehearsed for the 2015 Paris Air Show.

The new video offers the full flight routine and a new experience: Viewers can choose between camera angles to seamlessly see the full airplane and the pilots inside the flight deck. Boeing is among the first to use YouTube's experimental technology, known as Choose Your View, which provides a more immersive and interactive video experience.

"Our first 787-9 demonstration video was extremely popular and we're pleased to allow viewers around the globe to experience the exciting performance of the Dreamliner," said Sean McCormack, vice president, Communications, Commercial Airplanes. "Boeing is proud to be among the first companies to partner with YouTube on this innovative new technology."

Performed by Boeing test pilots to prepare for the air show, the routine showcases the many capabilities of the 787-9 in Vietnam Airlines' livery and demonstrates maneuvers never seen in typical flight. The first video from the practice sessions, which received well more than 10 million views worldwide in less than a week, included a condensed version of air-to-air footage. Today's release includes the full 7.5-minute routine and answers the questions so many viewers have noted in their comments about what it is like in the flight deck during a demonstration flight. This video is best experienced from a desktop/laptop computer. Mobile users may have limited functionality.

"We're thrilled to see what Boeing has created using the multi-angle technology from YouTube. The video gives viewers a unique perspective into a flight demonstration, creating a viewing experience that's incredibly interactive and immersive for fans," said Mike Miller, director, Business & Industrial Markets, Google.

The Boeing 787-9 is the second and newest member of the 787 family, super-efficient airplanes with new passenger-pleasing features. With the fuselage stretched 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 can fly more passengers and more cargo farther yet with the same exceptional environmental efficiency ? 20 percent less fuel use and emissions than the airplanes they replace. Thirty customers from around the world have ordered 509 787-9s, 46 percent of all 787 orders.

The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford is pleased to announce that its latest acquisition, VC10 serial number XR808 has now arrived at Cosford, following a final road trip along the M6 motorway.

After a successful eight month dismantling process carried out by GJD Services, a specialist maintenance and aircraft salvage company based at Bruntingthorpe Leicestershire, the VC10 finally arrived at Cosford on Sunday 21 June.

The 93ft long fuselage departed from Bruntingthorpe early on the Sunday morning and arrived at Cosford shortly after 1.00pm. Transported on a low loader lorry, the route saw the aircraft pass along the M69, M6 and the M54 to Cosford, via the nearby village of Shifnal. Too large to pass under the railway bridge at Cosford, the fuselage made its way to Junction 4 on the M54 and through Shifnal, with some tricky manoeuvring en route, before heading onto the airfield at RAF Cosford.
