RAF Tornado crews have used Stormshadow missiles against a very large concrete bunker in western Iraq, as part of air operations in the fight against Daesh.

Intelligence determined that Daesh had been using a large concrete bunker in western Iraq as a weapons facility. Due to the massive construction, built during the Saddam era, it was decided to use four Stormshadow missiles against it, as the weapon has particularly good capabilities against such a challenging target.

The missiles were launched on Sunday 26 June by two Tornados, all four Stormshadows scored direct hits and penetrated deep within the bunker.

  • EASA approves GX Aviation antenna on Lufthansa?s A320 family aircraft

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has approved a supplemental type certificate (STC) to Lufthansa Technik to install Inmarsat's Global Xpress (GX) Aviation Ka-band antenna on Lufthansa's Airbus A320 family aircraft. Lufthansa Technik is a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services subsidiary of Germany-based airline Lufthansa.

Last year, mobile satellite communications provider Inmarsat won a contract to provide GX Aviation in-flight connectivity service on Lufthansa's European continental fleet of more than 150 aircraft. Inmarsat Aviation president Leo Mondale said: "EASA's certification is an important milestone towards the service launch this year, as the A320 family is a popular workhorse for many airlines, business aviation operators and aircraft lessors.

"In addition, single-aisle aircraft as a whole are expected to account for 70% of new deliveries over the next 20 years. This highlights the vast market opportunities opened by this STC, especially as Inmarsat is positioned as the only provider that can serve A320 aircraft on a global basis throughout their lifecycle.

    Inmarsat

"It is also concrete evidence of the service's growing maturity. We have developed GX Aviation over the past five years as the only end-to-end solution in which every component, from the satellites, ground network and terminals to the cabin networks, internet features and support, has been engineered with mobility in mind to provide a high-quality experience for airline passengers."

The first Lufthansa short-haul and medium-haul aircraft with broadband internet on-board will debut its flight in October, with plans to install the system to other airlines in the Lufthansa Group in the future.

  • Nasa and Orbital ATK test SLS rocket booster in Utah, US

Nasa has tested a booster designed for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket at Orbital ATK's test facilities in Promontory, Utah, US. The test has marked the second and final ground qualification test of the solid rocket booster designed for SLS, which will conduct the first unmanned test flight with Nasa's Orion spacecraft in late 2018 and eventually undertake the agency's proposed journey to Mars. During the two-minute test, Nasa has been able to receive crucial data on 82 qualification objectives that will support certification of the booster for flight.

The rocket booster, built by Nasa contractor Orbital ATK, was tested at a cold motor conditioning target of 40?F and when ignited, temperatures inside the booster reached around 6,000?. Nasa Washington human exploration and operations mission directorate associate administrator William Gerstenmaier said: "This final qualification test of the booster system shows real progress in the development of the Space Launch System. "Seeing this test today, and experiencing the sound and feel of approximately 3.6 million pounds of thrust, helps us appreciate the progress we're making to advance human exploration and open new frontiers for science and technology missions in deep space."

    2

Once completed, two five-segment boosters and four RS-25 main engines will power SLS on future deep-space missions. The solid rocket boosters operate in parallel with SLS's main engines for the first two minutes of flight and will provide more than 75% of the thrust required by the rocket and Orion spacecraft to escape Earth's gravitational pull.

Nasa Alabama Marshall space flight centre SLS programme manager John Honeycutt said: "SLS hardware is currently in production for every part of the rocket. "Nasa also is making progress every day on Orion and the ground systems to support a launch from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. "We're on track to launch SLS on its first flight test with Orion and pave the way for a human presence in deep space."

Last March, first full-scale booster qualification ground test was conducted. The initial SLS configuration will be able to lift at least 70t capacity, while the next planned upgrade of SLS will have a 105t lift capacity.
