Level 6Maybe, but those are B-25Cs.

10 years agoMain AdminCorrect , sorry for helping.
I thought it might help with the "CAMO"
-
Level 6Duggy, all I meant was that they are older planes, so the paint job might not be same, as 8B is shown in the other pic. Some are barely painted over with OD, some are amolst completely OD and some might be camo, as shown in Catch-22.

Duggy
I will see what I can find, but I think your bird, was not just "OD"
Below taken on a mission to bomb Cassino 15th March 1944.
Those are older C model planes, but it's still an interesting photo for skinning purposes. Besides the camo, notice the two nearest planes have a second US cockade on the upper starboard wing which has been painted over. What's more, the painted over markings have a small bar, so they were definitely painted over some time after at least Aug 1943. The MTO had pretty low priority on supplies, so the groups there tended to use the older models longer than the groups in England.
FWIW, these planes did not last much longer after this photo was taken. Nearly all of the 340th BG's planes were destroyed by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius three days later on March 18th, 1944. The eruption covered the 340th's nearby airfield in hot ash, covering and burning the planes.
I cannot recall seeing any photos of J models from the 340th BG painted in camo, just plain OD tops. There could certainly have been some variation in paint tones that might look like camo as these planes were delivered in natural metal and painted in the field.
Monguse has a lot of skins for this group's planes on his old Warwings site.

Normally I'd caution people about using other skins or drawings as reference material, but I'll vouch for 'Guse being one of those who insists on historical accuracy.
He has a pretty extensive listing of photos as well.
Plane photos, page 1 (there are 22 pages)
Another good source for (usually high-res) official photos is the Fold3 site. Here's a search for "340th":

Here's the copy of Duggy's photo on fold3.

10 years agoSat Jun 07 2014, 08:51pmLevel 6I read the the 340th had the biggest number of aircraft losses. Not only Vesuvius, but also a surprise german raid that targeted the planes. I read about what I posted on warwingsart and have many of 'Guse's skins. They're very good! But he did miss a thing on Breifing time which is IN one of his pictures: The left side of the nose was painted over in OD, which went all the way down to the belly. Is was actually the first request I made here! I didn't know how to skin back then, of course
