11 years agoMain AdminOne this week the largest aircraft to serve with the Allies during the war, the XPB2M-1
-
AdminOne of the 5 Martin Mars planes built, the "Hawaii Mars", is still flying today as a water bomber.

Level 1Jim,
That is one incredible photo.
Would this be by any chance Canadian owned now?
-
AdminYep, they also owned the other surviving one (it can be ID'ed by a white tail and rudder in photos), but it went to the US Navy's museum in Pensacola last year. Apparently it was in pretty bad shape and hadn't been used as a water bomber for a number of years.
How's this for LOW!
-
Level 1Thanks Jim.
Huge !! -
11 years agoMain AdminJust the one, but it's one of my favourite's
-
AdminNice! That's the first time I've seen a colour photo of RAF Thunderbolts. As the rear a/c is in standard RAF cammo, I guess the front one is in US OD over grey?

Level 2Nice Pic of the 47's Duggy

EDIT - here you go Rudi, `Photographer Charles W. Cushman's beautiful Kodachome pictures of SNJ-2 tail number 2015 (the number 12 is on fuselage) at Chicago's Cook County Airport on November 15, 1941

11 years agoFri Feb 01 2013, 08:08pmAdminNice one mate! Can't tell for sure, but it appears to read "Wilmington NC" beneath the emblem near the windscreen. Looks a little dry for Wilmington though, unless it's late summer, or on a visit somewhere. They're 'sleeves down' so that probably rules out the "late summer" theory. Of course it could also read "Washington DC", and perhaps some other locations would fit as well.
Anyone have any facts, or other ideas?
EDIT - Duggy, thanks for the update on the location; that's a long way from Wilmington NC ..oh, and I finally wised-up and used the zoom feature in my browser; and the script appears to read "Washington D.C."
