An F6F-5N "Hellcat" fighter aircraft, guardian of the night skies, bores out over the East China Sea at dusk to intercept Japanese night raiders headed for the Okinawa area. The plane belongs to Marine Night Fighter Squadron 533 who set a record for the Pacific war by downing 29 enemy planes at night..

F4U-1D Corsair aircraft of VMF-312 is the second Corsair to land at Kadena airfield, Okinawa. The squadron is part of 2MAW.
FG-1D Corsair aircraft of MAW-4 on the gound at Iwo Jima. Fuel Stop -- Marine Corsair fighters, flown from a Marianas base line up briefly on one of Iwo Jima's busy airfields for refueling before taking off for the long over-water flight to Okinawa. Planes like these were being ferried by 4th MAW pilots to the Ryukyus front via the newly won Volcanic Island. Mt. Surbachi, extinct volcano, raises its head in the background.
F4U Corsair aircraft of VMF-312, checkered nose and tail Marine Corsair fighters, line the runway of the Kadena airfield on Okinawa Island. They have just recently landed on the captured strip and soon will be in action against the Japanese.
A work-horse on the road to Tokyo is this Corsair which has over 400 combat hours to its credit since the opening of Okinawan airfields to Second Marine Air Wing squadrons. Pride of the Hell's Belles fighter squadron, VMF-311, Marine Air Group 31, its guns have knocked eight enemy bombers and fighters into the sea and strafed targets from Okinawa to the mainland of Japan
This is a photo of ground crewmen making repairs on one of the Convair OY-1 in the shade of a wing of a bomber. This plane was the first to land on Okinawa.
The origins of the L-5, affectionately known as the "Flying Jeep", can be traced to the pre-war civilian Stinson HW-75. Capable of operating from short unimproved airstrips, the L-5 "Sentinel" delivered personnel, critical intelligence and needed supplies to the front line troops. On return flights, wounded soldiers were often evacuated to rear area field hospitals for medical treatment, providing a huge boost to the morale of combat troops fighting in remote areas. L-5's were used for many other important activities, such as aerial photography, controlling vehicle convoys, para-dropping food, medical supplies and ammunition, laying communication wire, distributing propaganda leaflets, spraying pesticide, transporting prisoners, and directing fighter-bombers to ground targets. The L-5 was also popular with Generals and other high-ranking officers for fast, efficient short-range transportation. The Navy and Marine version of the L-5 through L-5E were designated 0Y-1, and all these aircraft has 12-volt electrical systems. The 24-volt L-5G became the 0Y-2.

11 years agoMain AdminOver the Philippines, a formation of aircraft led by a captured Japanese Navy interceptor fighter aircraft Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Thunderbolt, allied code name "Jack"), of the Technical Air Intelligence Unit, South West Pacific Area (SWPA) located at Clark Field, Luzon (Philippines) from the end of January 1945. The aircraft was recovered from a makeshift airstrip in Manila when American forces recaptured the city. Other aircraft in the formation are a Royal Navy Seafire (lower left) and a U.S. Navy Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat. The Mitsubishi J2M's development to full combat status was delayed by technical problems and production indecision, resulting in employment being mainly in the defence of Japan from USAAF bombing.
