B-17C AN529 taken in North Africa 1941.
On Nov 8, 1941 at 1200 LT.The crew left RAF Shallufa that day to bomb all ships anchored in the Benghazi harbor. Following a successful mission, the crew were returning to there base when the aircraft ran out of fuel. As the engines number one, two and three failed, the captain decided to reduce his altitude and attempted an emergency landing in a desert area located 128 km west of Fort Maddalena. While the aircraft was damaged beyond repair, all eight crew members were unhurt and later rescued by a ground unit.
