12 years agoLevel 1Hi guys...
I just got started on making some Spit MkIa skins for an upcoming campaign for 610 sqn. I need clarification on the roundels used by the RAF on the early Spits...from July - August of 1940?
The info I have shows the oversized fuselage roundels with the larger sized tail markings...it's the upper wings that I'm not 100% sure about. Does anybody have definitive info about the squadron at that time? If so, please let me know...I'd hate to do a half-assed job with these skins and get something as simple as the roundels wrong!
As for the skins...I've just finished revising the MkIa template, getting it ready to work with. It's another one of those 'hybrid' templates I always tend to slap together. It's a combo of Rock, Emel, Jaypack, Kristorf and Nightshifter...and I think it looks amazing
As you can see there a still a few little things to adjust...but I'm really happy with it so far. I'm just not sure about the upperwing roudels...
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers,
KC -
Level 1Keith, there are lots of photos of 610 Sqdn from the BoB with various markings. I've got a pic somewhere that shows 3 aircraft all with different types of roundels. Be aware that some aircraft do not have roundels on the underside of the wings as they were not a necessity at the time.
Just a note that the roundels on top of the wing should just be a large blue circle with the red centre. Some aircraft have the large codes which extend onto the wing root, some do not. 610 squadron is an absolute lottery -
12 years agoLevel 1Thanks Rob!
Yeah, I was kind of afraid of that...at least the cammo patterns are only A or B style! I have a few books about the Spit, with great photos...however most of the shots of 610 squadron I've been able to locate are of the aircraft in flight at a 90 degree angle in level flight. It's tough to tell what markings were on the tops of the wings. In those screenshots above, I just defaulted to the pre-war markings of 38 / 39 - ish. I'll make the changes to the roundels and use the blue/red version as you suggested.
It's funny, now that you mention it...I just noticed that a few of the planes are lacking underwing roundels or are using the very small version that is located near the wing tip Oh boy...this is going to be fun!
I suppose as a last resort, I could always just do a web search for more info...but I'm hesitant to do that as so many so-called 'accurate' sites are anything but. I may have to filter any info I find through you guys here before committing to anything 100%.
Thanks again Rob!

Level 1
Not the different thickness of the outer yellow on the fuselage roundel. Roundels at this time were simply given 'Guidelines' so it was up to the painters interpretation.
Note the smaller roundel on this AC.

Level 1Oh, and watch out for fin flashes too

12 years agoLevel 1Yep...saw that as well I think I saw 3 versions?
I started messing around with the coding...and I'm finding it to be more trouble than it's worth. It's not getting the marks on the fuselage that's the problem, it's the overlapping codes over the wing root that is giving me fits. I went back into game with a blank skin and turned the markings on...and since the in-game codes are applied over the 3D model and texture, they do not distort. So that leaves me with a couple of choices...just doing generic blanks for the squadron with the different tail flashes, trying to get the f-ing codes to turn out correctly, or compromising and make the codes smaller to fit above the wing root...which totally defeats the purpose of making these skins. The oversized coding is what makes these planes look so cool. Which leads me to my question:
Has anyone had any success with applying codes that overlap the wing root on the Spit MkI - MkV?
Seriously...I'm pulling my hair out on this
Cheers,
KC

Level 1That is exactly why I bailed out ever trying to do them.
I'm here to have fun. Maybe you should talk with Kristorf as he is the master of this nonsense -
12 years agoLevel 1Well, as far as I can remember he never did any skins for 610 sqn...probably because of the codes

Level 1Well Let me look for a lesson he sent me

Level 1I found what you need Keith. Chris sent it to me two or three years ago. I've RAR'd it up for you
