Level 1Underwing roundels wre not standard until September of 1940, also the colour of the underside of spits would vary untill that time too.
610 had a very dark shade of duck egg blue. -

Level 1some 109s for the other side
-
Level 1Beautiful, crisp lines and sharp detail, these paintjobs upgrade the whole sim! As much as you are polishing these, I am polishing the missions, to bring these works of art together over the English countryside.

Level 1Jg53 with their strange fetish for RLM02

12 years agoThu Apr 05 2012, 04:22pmLevel 1From my JG53 campaign, mission 10:
JG53-10
THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
While JG53 was making a reputation for itself during the Battle of Britain Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring was informed that Major Jurgen von Cramon-Taubadel's first wife, Viola von Kaufmann-Asse, was of Jewish ancestry. Goring's reaction was to order the whole of Stab/JG53 to remove the "Pik As" emblem from their aircraft, replacing it with a red stripe around the engine cowling as a 'mark of shame'.
Soon afterwards many members of JG53 protested Goring's order, often stripping the swastikas from the tails of their aircraft in a rebellious gesture. During this phase of the Battle of Britain, JG53's planes were easily recognizable because of the red band and even the occasional absence of a swastika from the tail of their Bf-109's! Finally on November 20th, 1940, when Major Gunther Freiherr von Maltzahn took over command of JG53 and von Cramon-Taubadel commenced a staff position within the Luftwaffe, the order was rescinded and the whole affair quietly forgotten.
Lovely work Travis and part of the history of JG53 is illustrated...
The aircraft in the foreground looks to me like that of Hans-Georg Schulte, an ace with eight kills from 7 Staffel/Jagdgeschwader 53, who actually had his Red-Band ?punishment mark? painted over and as a further protest also painted over the swastika on his Emil.
We know this because the aircraft was severely damaged in combat with No.41 and No.222 Squadron Spitfires during a freelance patrol over Dover. Schulte attempted to put down at RAF Manston but force landed at Vincent's Farm, just north of the airfield, where he was captured unhurt. The plane was described as an ?Me109? (a common error from the period*)-White cowling, spinner and rudder (might want to check that, photos are better than notes!). Camouflaged mottled light and dark green and grey. Thick red band painted out. Aircraft constructed by Erla, Werke Nr. 1506. Fitted with DB 601A/1 engine, Mercedes Benz work nr.62611.
*Bf109 derives from ?Bayerische Flugzeugwerke?. In July 1938, Willy Messerschmitt was appointed Chairman and Managing Director and the name of the company changed to Messerschmitt AG ? any new designs from that point onwards would have Me instead of Bf prefix designations, hence Bf109/Me262.
Strangely, most British historians, writers, commentators and artists seem completely unable to grasp this idea and you can still read about 'Me109s' in quite modern publications in Britain, but not in the rest of the world.

Level 1wow, very interesting piece of history there, can't believe I hadn't heard of this before
-
Level 1The only photo I have showing the rudder has all the fabric stripped off it, SO I will go with the notes and put a white rudder on it
It also makes sense to change the rudder on 'white 9' as the high contrast of the photo could well be white.
The Whole Bf/Me thing is pretty subjective, there were official German documents that refer to the Me109, and pilots also called them "Me's" -

That's a very good point and explains how the term persists, I will present a more balanced view of the issue in future. They will always be Bfs to me though.
These Emils look incredible, you guys are really pushing the envelope! This particular flight has a special place in the BoB campaign and are also in the JG53 campaign as the 'Player' aircraft. So we get to examine them closely from either side!
With detailed scenery, Random AI Skill, Dynamic Weather, GCI, Wingman Calls, Coastal Spotters, Airfield Observers, Aimpoints, Spawning Runners and Fires, I will ensure that the missions for these skins reflect the same attention to detail. When you raise the bar others have to raise their game to keep up.
